When the storms follow me through slumber
6:47am. the world is awake, greeting me with the remanence of once bloated skies,
now grey, now empty,
knowing before my eyes meet the dim glow of dawn.
rustling, tossing,
drowning in the nest of sheets our legs built through the night.
unnerved, furrowed brow,
then like the light peeking through the shades,
i feel you drape your arm around me.
pulling me so close, as if i wasn't where i belonged before this moment.
with a warm whisper and our hearts now aligned, you calm me.
"hush, now. it's okay, love,"
you hum against my ear as you rub my back.
my breathing steadies as you paint pictures with your lips
on the nape of my neck.
your hand follows the curvature of my right side
and warmth radiates off of your fingertips.
i shouldn't sleep on my left shoulder, you often say.
it's been bothering me.
so gentle, you are.
you say nothing more, gathering me up
into the framework of your chest.
so i turn to you, meeting your lips with mine.
your touch effortlessly quiets the pain.
another day i awake to the hurricane in my mind
and the toll its taken on my body.
another day i awake to your embrace.
my bones no longer ache.
my mind becomes quiet.
again, i am safe.
again, i am home.
with you, always, i am loved.
