The post has been removed. We dont allow discussion of piracy sites

Edit: To be more clear, as I seem to have confused the point. Discussion of piracy as a concept and of removed mods is fine. Where we draw the line is when you start naming sites, discussing content on specific piracy sites or actively linking to them breaks our rules. Sorry for the poor wording.

Just for clarification here I honestly didn't know that was a piracy site. I just thought it was a random little mod hosting site, which is why I was asking the user who posted the link if it had exclusive mods (not a question you'd generally ask about a piracy site).

I know, which is why I just explained why it was being removed, it wasn't an actual warning don't worry :) At first glance it didn't look like a piracy site, its only that I'd heard of it and also knew of specific markers to look for that I was able to recognize the issue.

Post Removed. Rule 2. No Piracy.

I really wish you guys would do away with this rule, this is supposed to be a discussion board, not a police station. I can't really imagine any good reason for this rule other than moral ones, which shouldn't be taken into account.

Speaking as a user, not a moderator: Even if you believe morality has nothing to do with it, which I strongly disagree with personally, there are still benefits. When you open up to allowing pirated files, it becomes harder to filter the official and the unofficial sources and becomes harder to troubleshoot when you have people freely sharing their own copies of files around rather then making sure everyone's getting things from official sources.

It also takes away from the author, and ego doesn't even come into it here, as if you remove the author from the equation it becomes harder for them to get bug reports and the feedback that are already desperately hard to get in the first place. When you already have authors who literally beg for feedback and get none, or have bugs in their files for ages simply because no one thought to report it, creating multiple steps between the ACTUAL author and the user is only going to make that worse.

Even if you push all that aside as well, having a no piracy rule helps respect those who have very legitimate reasons for wanting their file removed or hidden, and helps to protect users who may otherwise be taken advantage of by malicious thieves who use pirated files to harm games, people or even to cause drama and be abusive to others.

Nothing in the rule limits discussion. You're still more then welcome to discuss files that have been removed, discuss the reasons for removal, and even discuss the modification, patching or fun things to do with those files for those who have them. You can even discuss piracy itself as a concept if you wish and we've had those discussions on the subreddit before (I actually wish I could find what I wrote up then). Where we draw the line is when people start participating in or advocating in favor of piracy such as providing links to pirated files or encouraging people to do so.

I really don't think piracy creates any sort of discrepancy between user and author, the only mods that get pirated are the ones that are no longer available from the author. Your other points are valid, whether they justify the rule or not is up for debate but they're valid nonetheless.

Probably something about liability or somesuch.

I doubt a subreddit can be held liable for anything their users post unless there's some sort of official request that they ignore or the post disobeys the rules of reddit itself, which are definitely not explicitly against piracy since there are successful subreddits centered around it.

moral reasons shouldn't be taken into account

I shiggy diggy.

In all seriousness, how many users of this subreddit do you think are mod authors? Most have at least some opinion about how their work should be shared or used. If this subreddit openly changed their rules so that they no longer cared in any way what the mod author wanted, how many mod authors do you think would stay here?

this is supposed to be a discussion board

It is. Shockingly enough, not allowing links to removed mods doesn't do much to stifle actual discussion. If you disagree, feel free to start your own /r/skyrimmodsbutwithpiracy. If enough other people think that's a better way of doing things, it'll all work out for you.

I have no desire to start, run, or moderate a subreddit, especially not one that almost certainly won't succeed no matter how well it's maintained. Are there any notable instances of a subreddit community moving to another similar one because of a relatively minor rule change?
