where i come from
where i come from
i come from a long
line of proud people
who preserved
their history in songs
of ancestral panegyrics,
and then forgot the words.
so now, we hum a broken
tune.
where i come from,
the knots of wrappers
where mothers
used to keep wisdom
are now occupied
by awe-inspiring
curses, and rhapsodies
of name-callings
fit only for folake who
wears skirts that
stop above her knee.
the feets of
fathers are empty
because the tales
they tell are now
nothing but stale
half truths of men
who have grown too
rich, and whispers
of things the children
do not care to know.
here, juveniles
rid their tongue of
the sharpness of their 's',
and hang around
in the mirth of a
make believe world
where statue-still
images are the measure
of worth.
where i come from,
the people are as content
as hopeful people can ever
hope to be.
and in our own way,
we have made the best
of the days and of
the season.
