Just a reminder, there's a free Cthulhu alternative. MidiChords. This short/shitty video shows you where to find it and download some presets.

Personally. I use chordz and I really like it. But I always like trying new things so I'll probably check this out soon.

I've used chordz too. If I remember correctly, I think there's less room to store chords. Like, you only have the keys in that octave to store chords, right? Maybe I'm wrong. I just prefer midiChords because it makes more sense to me and I can store a lot of chords.

Yea it'd be nice to have more. I liked chordz because I liked that it transposed the chords to different octaves unlike chutulu but honestly, with the way that I've been writing lately I don't really need that feature anymore.

Chordz looks PC only. midiChords is mac too.

if anyone is wondering how to get it working in fl studio here is the way: you need to go into vst wrapper settings (the plug and gear icon, the one before the wrench) of midiChords, and assign an output port under the midi section, then go to the plugin you want to play the sound and assign to it the same number in the input port

Thanks! How would I get it to record the midi notes? Recording seems to only record the notes played but not the midi output from midichords. My apologies if this is a stupid FL question.

FL Studio doesn't record MIDI output.

There are a couple workarounds that have been discussed in the IL forums. Some involve running FLStudio as a VST within a project, and others involve third party VSTs to record the midi. Here's an example: http://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=159651&p=1138399#p1138399

Thanks, you saved me

Are there any of these that have a adaptive voicing feature? It really annoys me e.g. in Cthulhu that in many factory and third party presets the chord voicings are completely random. You get like a 3 note triad next to a 6 note m7b5 that's an octave lower, and it really kills the playability.

Cubase has this but you can only store a handful of chords per preset.

Besides modifying the presets to be more to your liking and saving them within the plugin, I'm not too sure.

Obelisk by Frozen Plain just came out and does this and more.

I just picked this up yesterday and my lord is it amazing for experimenting! You can add voicings with a simple click!

It's so good. The best part for me is that it's easy to rig up the key switches for inversions. So voice leading is super clean to manage. All these other chord apps I own (Cthulu amongst many others) are trash for voice leading and inversions.

Can you detail how exactly you do it in there? I had a look at the product page but it just looked like one of the many available MIDI harmonisers / scale constrainers to me. Does it still facilitate easy experimentation with non diatonic chords like Cthulhu does? Combining that aspect with proper voice leading would be my dream product.

This is its own instrument. How would I use this in tandem with an ableton instrument?

1
NewShepherd•

This creates the midi outputs to another midi channel. You have to have two channels created, one with the midiChords plugin and the other with the instrument you want. The instrument channel should be receiving its inputs from the midiChords channel. Make sense how to set that up? Make sure that the Monitoring is "On".

Thanks for the help!

SoundAndFoundOP•

It is not its own instrument. It is just a MIDI device. The sound you hear in the video is a synth (not pictured in the video) that was receiving the MIDI data from midiChords. You should be able to place this in front of an ableton instrument and have it work immediately.

*At least I assume it will work this way. That is how it works for me in Bitwig.

Edit: Nope. I was wrong.

4
Rivanni•

You can't place VST's in front of MIDI devices in Ableton. You have to use MIDI routing.

1
SoundAndFoundOP•

Yeah. I assumed wrongly. As I mentioned at the bottom of my comment before, I'm used to the ease of how things work in Bitwig.

This looks interesting, and I've got it working with Reaper, but are there any more presets? I've downloaded the suggested 'Bach Chorales' and 'Iconic' chords, but does anyone know where to find other sets of chords?

1
SoundAndFoundOP•

I know there is something on KVR. This. Try the first and third downloads. The second one is the bach chorale you already downloaded.

Cool, thanks!

Take dat Steve

SoundAndFoundOP•

Lol. Cthulhu still has much more features. Plus the arpeggiator.

2
lowlinksoundcloud.com/lowlink•

Probably. I mean, it should have, you pay for it. No hate on Steve though, he seems like a great dude for the most part, I was just hoping senpai would notice me >(

Is this have random chords as chtulhu? :(

1
ofoot•

Can it has arp?

1
SoundAndFoundOP•

No. It plays chords simultaneously or it strums. Sort of like a guitar would.

For those with FL Studio, you have VFX KeyMapper for Chords and stuff. Must be used inside Patcher + any instrument.

Donated to support your continued development. Keep doing your thing, homie!

SoundAndFoundOP•

Thanks. Actually, I am not the developer. Just a fan of the developer that thinks more people should know about him.
