In the march of time civilizations peak and crater. The crater periods usually are when a lot of people are dying. Scrolls we find rarely. Complicated engineering was both taught and written. Word of mouth breaks down when the knowledgeable die off.
Much like modern America, today few know the technology that made us an industrial powerhouse. The guys that knew hot riveting, lathes, mills, metallurgy, farming are dying off. Nafta guaranteed that such things would leave to other lands. Some of the knowledge is "stored" on the internet. How permanent is that? One EMP and a hundred years of war and most of that, too, will be gone, consumed by the dark ages that grind everything to dust, like how they made pyramids or how we made computer chips.
