Indiana US Senators, Representatives, as well as a handful of state figures, respond to Charlottesville

Politics

I compiled this for a request in r/keep_track, posted it over in r/indiana, and u/xenokilla requested I drop it in over here too.

Sen. Joe Donnelly:

We must stand together against hatred and bigotry that doesn't represent our values as Hoosiers or Americans. -Joe #Charlottesville

Sen. Todd Young:

The love & compassion I see from Hoosiers daily is stronger than the fringe hatred on display in #Charlottesville. The former will prevail.

Rep. Jackie Walorski, 2nd District:

I strongly condemn the violence and bigotry on display in #Charlottesville. Such hateful acts go against everything we value as Americans.

Rep. Jim Banks, 3rd District:

Whatever our political differences, we all must reject the hatred, bigotry, and racism on display in Charlottesville.

Rep Todd Rokita, 4th District [1] | [2]:

All Americans should come together to condemn the type of violence and hatred we've seen in Charlottesville, VA today. 1/2

Those engaging in violence should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Our prayers are with those affected by this tragedy. 2/2

Rep. Susan Brooks, 5th District:

Violence has no place in our streets &neighborhoods. The hate, bigotry& racism spewed in #Charlottesville is deeply disturbing & un-American

Rep. Luke Messer, 6th District:

Hate & bigotry are Un-American and should be condemned in the strongest terms. Our prayers go out to victims of violence in #Charlottesville

more Messer, via email

I condemn racism and bigotry. What happened in Charlottesville was unacceptable and un-American. It’s long past time for folks to come together. I know there’s been some question about the rise of white nationalists and neo-Naziism, and I condemn both.

...

I know that’s where most Hoosiers are. Most Hoosiers are heartbroken by the tragedy in Charlottesville. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the violence there, and we’re all hopeful we can come back together as a country.

Rep. André Carson, 7th District:

Make no mistake, the tragedy in #Charlottesville is domestic terrorism. We must condemn it. We must confront it.

more Carson (co-sponsoring resolution demanding Trump disavow white supremacists):

The President should model American values for our nation. Congress should not have to pass a resolution in order for him to reject racism and hate.

Rep. Larry Bucshon, 8th District, via email:

I stand with all Americans in condemning the hatred, bigotry, and violence displayed in Charlottesville. Racism is abhorrent and inexcusable, contradicts the values on which this great country was founded, and has no place in the public discourse of a healthy democracy.

As a nation, we must not succumb to the will of hate-filled, fringe groups who seek division and chaos. Instead, we must unify in rejecting the evil we saw perpetrated by white supremacists groups.

Rep. Todd Hollingsworth, 9th District:

The bigotry demonstrated in #Charlottesville does not represent our great nation & must be condemned. Prayers to those injured or killed.

Bonus round...

Governor Eric Holcomb:

We must all condemn violence, bigotry & racism shown in Virginia today. Our thoughts & prayers w/ those who lost their lives or were injured

Attorney General Curtis Hill:

Hoosiers and all Americans should reject hatred and attacks based on race. These gutless cowards in Charlottesville have no place in our democracy. Their shameful message should be condemned by all without hesitation and those who have caused injury and incite must be held to account for their criminal conduct.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett:

Yesterday's violence and racism in Charlottesville points my moral compass toward our Landmark for Peace in Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park.

These men were fallen leaders in our march toward progress. But I'm reminded that each year when we gather, we celebrate what they stood for, not the hatred that laid them down.

May we continue to stand. - Joe

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, potential 2020 presidential candidate:

We denounce all political violence. And we specifically denounce Nazism. To do both is not only possible, it is necessary. #charlottesville

Hat Tip to the Indy Star and Fox 59 for their tweet compilations, and to the Terre Haute Tribune Star who reached out to Reps Messer and Bucshon.
