Snark From Anonymous SF Moderators, or, When We Don't Let the Votes Decide

Disclaimer: You may or may not agree this link belongs on r/sanfrancisco, but I'm more interested in just putting another example out there of the behavior of the mods on this sub.

I posted this link, which I found on a Facebook page for a San Francisco neighborhood coalition, because I felt it was relevant to problems we face in San Francisco, and that page did, too: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/18/16162234/regional-inequality-cause (I posted it with an unedited title)

This was the ensuing response, yet again from an anonymous account instead of an identified account:

Nothing but snark. This is how the people who are supposed to be stewards of this subreddit and ambassadors for local culture treat the denizens of this sub. Perhaps there was a political motivation.

I'll also be posting this to r/sanfranciscoII in case it gets deleted from here.

Nothing but snark.

And an explanation for why your post was removed...

In unnecessarily rude terms, and then I was muted from messaging the mods when I was not being abusive towards them. Serious question: Is that how you want your mods to behave?

It's not like they're paid. They told you why the post was removed and you kept arguing. I'm fine with them muting you and moving on if you don't accept their initial response.

This wasn't arbitrary. Yeah maybe they could have been more polite but it's not like you're owed anything more than an explanation.

Did this post really not belong? Is it less relevant than a lot of other posts?

Either way, not a huge deal, but I wanted to put some light on this procedure.

Did this post really not belong?

In my opinion, yes, it does not.

Is it less relevant than a lot of other posts?

In my opinion, yes, it is a lot less relevant to to this sub than a lot of other posts

Housing is a big issue in SF. So is homelessness. So is Mass transit.

It could go on and on. I think it is reasonable to say, if you are interested in those topics generally, you should find a subreddit that discusses those topics more generally.

r/sanfrancisco is about San Francisco so if you post has nothing specific to say about SF, but something that can equally apply to SF, Toko or Austin, then it doesn't fit here.

That's up to them tbh. Some subs are stricter than others.

What there is snarky? I don't see anything snarky.

sugarwax1•

The article really didn't reference SF. Why would it matter who provided you the link?

The sub is far from starved of discussion on the topic of housing.

I see no snark.

They were not particularly rude, perhaps a bit short with you but nothing to complain about. These are moderators, not your local Starbucks baristas who are required to deliver customer service with a smile. They do a free service for a free website, and most of the time they do a decent job. What exactly do you want from them? A participation trophy for your efforts? Here you go 🏆

The Warriors are the Bay's team. Anything Warriors related is by extension San Francisco related.

Silicon Valley has been informally expanded to refer to the entire Bay Area tech economy. It's no longer a synonym for the Santa Clara valley. It annoys the shit out of me, but it is true.

The Avocado Toast example is legit though. Should have been removed.

Disagree. At least until they are located in San Francisco. r/BayArea is plenty receptive to Warriors threads.

So then surely 49ers posts don't count as San Francisco related either, right?

DoneAlreadyDoneOP•

Wait, what's their full name, again?

Thanks, your thoroughness often comes in handy.

Sadly, it wasn't at all hard to find evidence of double-standards in r/sf moderation.

The way they behave, I'm kind of glad I'm not one of their favorites.
