At a crossroads in life, there's nothing I want more than to bury myself in backpacking anywhere, everywhere. Fuck just get me out of here.

221
Cannabaholic•

Takes about $5,000 to do the entire Appalachian Trail in one push, known as a thru-hike. That'll take about 6 months of your life's time and bury the fuck out of it in backpacking. It's a truly amazing and worthwhile experience to have. And you can section it if you can't save 5 stacks, but the culture and experience thru-hiking should not be missed! Source: I just finished it.

142
x_m_n•

while 5k$ isn't huge, 6 months worth of wages is, that's the true cost that most of us can't afford.

170
Freezingkiwi•

Depends where you are in life. If you're kid free hate your job and your lease is up soon then fuck it you don't get a second chance at life. Do it before your knees or back give up

57
madmenyo•

Add your rent and taxes to it too. The best time to do this is after college when you still live at your parents.

1
shawnwilson14•

Broke college student here. I think everyone young person wants to travel. $5,000 is a lot for me, a hell of a lot, but with the right budgeting anyone can do it. My parents wanted to travel when they were younger, and couldn't, but now they're obviously both working and won't get to until they retire. Also means they're older though so it will most certainly limit to what they can do traveling wise. Kinda sucks to think about if we don't travel young the chances of going out to do it grow even slimmer as time progresses.

1
snake_plisssken•

Hiked the PCT last year... $5k is accurate as far as costs once the hike starts, give or take. However, be prepared to spend another couple thousand on some high quality, LIGHTWEIGHT gear. The hardest part really is getting the time to complete the hike (about 4-6 months; and over 2,600 miles). Other than that, it was the most amazing experience of my life so far!! The John Muir Trail is basically a 200ish mile section of the PCT in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and is, in my opinion, one of the best sections. It is also one of the toughest sections as you climb and descend steep mountains at elevations up to around 14,000 feet. All that said, I would highly recommend!

36
Thundahcaxzd•

I'm class of 2016 as well! (my trail name was Socks, but I know there was more than 1 Socks). Funny seeing this photo and thinking, "huh, I don't even remember this lake or this view." There are so many amazing views up there, you become hella desensitized to shit like this. To look at it now though, makes me ache for it.

Hiked the PCT last year

I envy you, the friendly kind of envy. Congratulations, you crazy one-eyed person, you.

Thank you very much.

Personally wanting to trek the countries of my ancestors. Germany, Norway, Japan, France. Let's ducking go!

The Appalachian Trail is nice but it is no comparison to the John Muir trail in beauty or in how challenging it is to backpack.

1
Cannabaholic•

Both terrain wise and topographically speaking the AT is much harder than the PCT. The John Muir trail can't really compare as it less than a 10th of the size of the AT, it is more of a west coast Long Trail (Vermont trail, ~270 miles). Comparing those two trails would be more intriguing to me.

1
EdwardOfGreene•

5k? I thought "Hiking the Appalachian trail" was just the cost of a flight to Argentina to shtoop your misstress.

1
Stratiform•

Do it. Don't think, just do. Someday you'll be married with 2 kids as the thoughts of former adventures will keep you going strong as you sit through tee-ball games and look forward to when they head to college, so you can resume adventuring.

42
Pizzacanzone•

Take the kids with you exploring. They'll grow up better people for it.

47
Stratiform•

We do, but they're young and definitely impact the travel budget. "Exploration" is much more local these days.

22
LiteraCanna•

No idea who you are, but I love you.

I'm kind of going insane at the moment and I need to do something.

I quit my job last year and blew $8,000 (all but about $300 of my savings) on a 47-day, 10,000 mile solo road trip from my home in California to Alaska and back.

Best thing I ever did and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

10
LincolnHighwater•

This might sound crazy, but... Go with the expectation that you're going to die.

Go.

Explore. Be curious. Be fearless. Be open to a reasonable degree. Get lost; and when the time is right, either find yourself or get found.

And speaking from personal experience, don't neglect the return to society or you may find yourself in a helluva quagmire.

Ninja edit: you're going to die someday, just like all the rest of us.

8
IrishHonkey•

Do what my dad did; put em inboy scouts and you'll find yourself doing 10 mile hikes once a month till Philmont. Then you'll be doing 10 mile hikes every day for 7 days straight. (Along with a lot of other activities like mapping, survival cooking, shooting, basket weaving, navigation, survival swimming, art, etc.)

7
tanninman•

I want to learn more. Specifically, did your dad do the 10 mile hikes while you were away in camp? Or are you suggesting it gets kids to do 10 mile hikes for fun? I mean I know that's 70s tv taught me about Boy Scouts but it sounds to me like the best bet is to go exploring while they're away at camp.

As a Fresno native i second this. Keep posting pictures of half dome.

29
ninjamom1416•

Totally agree. I'm from Fresno as well and we want people to just keep going up there while we enjoy the quiet clean parks .

4
N0M0REG00DNAMES•

As a fellow Fresno native, the caveat here is that this only applies when they aren't on fire.

3
ninjamom1416•

Sadly, very true.

1

I'm only like 2 hours away and have never been to either... Every time I want to go no one wants to join since it isn't Yosemite...

2

Well I understand it's not as appealing to go solo if you're not used to it, hiking and camping by yourself has its own set of challenges and can be really fun. 90% of visitors don't get past the first mile of the trail so even the giant forest can offer you some good, quiet hiking. It's worth the trip

1

Haha exactly

2
mattenthehat•

I love sequoia and kings canyon, but damn, yosemite has got to be my favorite place in the world. I would give anything to explore it the way Muir did, without any of the crowds.

24

Just visit in December/January instead. Bring a set of snowshoes or cross-country skis and you can explore while avoiding all the crowds.

20

We're planning on going to Sequoia and Kings Canyon soon. Yosemite is definitely a shit-show at the moment. I think they need to ban cars and force people to take shuttles within the park. The National Forests between Yosemite and Sequoia are also great.

The main reason Yosemite gets all the attention is because it has a trans-Sierra highway and is Disneylanded to hell. To get here, you have to go over Kearsarge Pass. That effort gets rid of 98% of people.

WHat doesn't California have??

6
Badwater2k•

Disclaimer: I'm a native Californian shill and could probably work for the travel board for how proud I am of my state and talk it up.

To answer your question: Not much. We don't have the tropics or the sub-tropics like Florida. Our ocean is not warm (but our coast is gorgeous). Other than that, we have just about everything.

It may be a hard sell, but California really is THE mountain state of the West. We have the tallest mountain in the lower 48, the tallest measured waterfall in North America, the largest alpine lake in North America, the tallest, most massive, and oldest living things on the planet (all different species of trees), dozens of glaciers, and California is home to John Muir's "Range of Light".

7
AelredoftheSierras•

TIL 6250ish feet is Alpine. That's weird to me, I feel I don't cross into Alpine territory until 8000 feet or so.

2
dwarfbear•

I'm moving to the bay in 2 weeks. Please tell me more cool stuff, I can't wait to be there!

2
Badwater2k•

Sure! By land area, California is about 50 percent larger than Germany, and if it were a country, California would have the world's sixth largest economy. The highest and lowest points in the lower 48 are both in California, and are only 88 miles apart. The nearby Owen's Valley is the deepest in North America, with a valley floor below 4,000 feet and mountains on either side well over 14,000 feet. California is the only state in the Continental US to have 14ers in three separate mountain ranges. Despite being larger in land area than the Alps in Europe, the Sierra Nevada receives so much snow that it becomes largely impassable in the winter, with only a few mountain passes cleared of snow and kept open (using explosives...they used to use artillery but the unexploded shells were dangerous to hikers in the summer). A big winter storm can close the passes for days at a time (and historically have even stranded passenger trains), with daily snowfall accumulations that can be measured in meters. In the depths of a big snow year, there can be 40-80 feet of it on the ground in places. Because of this, warm sunny days in late spring and early summer can prompt flood warnings in the Foothills and the Valley because of melting snow.

The Redwood Forests (temperate rain forests on the coast) are the most productive land biome on the planet in terms of the amount of living matter per square acre. The scenes of the Endor Moon in Return of the Jedi were filmed there. The redwood trees are so large that there are species of insects found only in one individual tree.

California is home to more National Parks than any other state, including Yosemite, which was the first land set aside to be federally protected as a public resource (Yellowstone was the first National Park, Yosemite was number two). Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to one of California's many active volcanos, and Lassen last erupted in 1915.

There's a lot more you can say about this state, but those are some fun facts to get you started.

1

Common sense.
