Just wrote a poem. Looking for feedback/impressions.
As he walked through the town
Not a face turned his way
The unhappy masses
Cared not if he stayed
Three years since he left
With this trouble in tow
Mistaken for someone
He hoped not to know
Then rolling through days
Without sorrow or care
And him leaving behind
Little special or rare
Always wrapped loose around
Was his ragged green shirt
Its hole in the shoulder
A fossil of hurt.
Restless he wandered
Staying nowhere for long
At times fiercely chased
By the guilt of his wrongs
But rest he did learn
From his weakest relief
For no man can withstand
His own trouble or grief
Because all by himself
He will lay out his crimes
And choose from among them
The ones that malign
His own bursting desire
For honor and praise
Which haunts his poor conscience
For long-troubled days
Those days that protect
The self-sameness of good
Whereby they first taught him
To do as he should.
And for the first time in ages
He sits in one place
To let the town's people
Look down on his face
Though not one of them turns
And not a single one smiles
At last there is something
For this unfettered child
The boy I was once
But no longer am
Had fools in his head
And a heart full of sand.
