Autumn Equinox

The Mind Extends Beyond Bedrock (alternate title)
 
Reach an arm out
like a splayed limb of an
old tree over water, a cool
September lake.
Reach out to silence
the woodpecker of an alarm then
silence the woodpecker-like thoughts
with a shot of artificial
cellophane screen light that screams,
"awaken!"
Reach out a leg and fall
upon feet into the first
day of Fall, groggy with stiffness
till a lake of liquid forgiveness
falls from glass lips onto
cracked ones, till cool rain
washes away last night's oil.
