Weekly Vainglory 8 Discussion | October 7 - 8, 2017

Discussion

Hello, and welcome to the eighteenth week of Vainglory 8 posts. Just to remind you, these eSport and Vainglory 8 discussion posts will be put up every Friday, replacing the weekly discussion, and will be taken down on Monday for the next weekly discussion. These posts will be an opportunity to catch up on last week’s results before the upcoming matches over the weekend as well as hopefully discuss the Vainglory 8 as it happens, updating you with the results as quickly as the moderator team can! As of now, the posts will only cover Europe and North America. This week covers the first week of the first split of the autumn season.

You can find relevant media concerning these matches below!

Of course, this will contain spoilers for the last week of Vainglory 8 matches, which you can find on YouTube here.

#Europe

#Fnatic vs. G2 eSports: G2 eSports Won

With both teams having made it to the semifinals last week and G2 eSports only losing out to SK Gaming, whom Fnatic had also lost to, the series looked like it would be relatively close coming in. However, G2 eSports managed to turn heads as they 2-0ed Fnatic, hopefully a sign that they might yet return to their spring dominance of Europe.

#Saltypotatoes vs. Team Qlash: Saltypotatoes Won

Admittedly, Team Qlash was knocked out soundly the week before by SK Gaming, but one should bear in mind that SK Gaming more or less dominated the entire weekend, so Team Qlash’s weak performance was not unique to them. In contrast, Saltypotatoes did put up a convincing fight against G2 eSports, but were still unable to beat them in the end. Given that, it, once again, wouldn’t have been unreasonable to expect a somewhat close series. However, Saltypotatoes showed up in form that day, knocking out Team Qlash with a quick 2-0.

#Dynasty vs. Mousesports: Mousesports Won

Just in terms of past performances, Dynasty definitely had the edge coming into this matchup. Mousesports has looked rather weak since their one dominant split in the early summer, failing to live up to the hype that they garnered during that period. Nonetheless, Dynasty failed to put up as strong of a showing as one might expect from them and mousesports managed to pull the 2-1 win over their opponents.

#SK Gaming vs. Calamity Reborn: SK Gaming Won

Calamity Reborn has struggled even more than Saltypotatoes, their fellow Challenger team, to find success in the European Vainglory 8, despite how strong their roster is mechanically. In sharp contrast, SK Gaming has had consistent success overall, tilting the matchup heavily into their favor. Indeed, the series would go as expected, with SK Gaming winning with a strong 2-0 performance.

#Semifinal: Saltypotatoes vs. G2 eSports: G2 eSports Won

A matchup that was reasonably close the week before, G2 eSports eventually won out. This week, while Saltypotatoes might have been able to pull a win, G2 eSports remained the favorites in this matchup against the far less experienced team. Eventually, the series would end with G2 eSports winning even more convincingly than the week before.

#Semifinal: Mousesports vs. SK Gaming: SK Gaming Won

Mousesports has some wild performances at times, but in comparison to SK Gaming, a strong and consistent force on the Fold, they are severely lacking. The series would go as expected with SK Gaming wiping the floor with Mousesports 2-0.

#Third Place Series: Saltypotatoes vs. Mousesports: Saltypotatoes Won

Despite having had limited success this week against Dynasty, Saltypotatoes has looked fare more consistent. Similar to the matchup against SK Gaming, if a bit less decided, mousesports certainly looked poorly coming in, and it reflected in the series. Saltypotatoes emerged 2-0.

#Finals: G2 eSports vs. SK Gaming: SK Gaming

With G2 eSports looking excellently last weekend, it definitely seemed that they could pose a challenge to SK Gaming. Overall, however, the matchup certainly did look somewhat in favor of SK Gaming, who performed better the week before. While it was eventually closed out in favor of SK Gaming, G2 eSports managed to put up a strong showing, bringing the series to three games and just barely losing out.

#North America

#TSM vs. Nova eSports: Nova eSports Won

With TSM losing out to Cloud9 in the finals of last week, they certainly were looking to come back this weekend in force. Unfortunately for them, Nova eSports, who were certainly the underdogs coming into this series, found themselves in a dominant position over their more traditionally strong opponents, knocking them out 2-0.

#Rogue vs. Tempo Storm: Rogue Won

While Tempo Storm has had some shining moments previously, their performance as of late has been less than inspiring. In contrast, Rogue did show up against Nova eSports last week, managing to beat them out in a rather close series. In the end, this series would ultimately reflect both teams’ records, with Rogue coming out ahead of Tempo Storm.

#Tribe Gaming vs. Hammers: Tribe Gaming Won

Tribe Gaming was undoubtedly the stronger team in this matchup, having beaten Hammers just recently at the Unified Live Championships, and the series went as one would expect, with Hammers losing out handily to Tribe Gaming.

#Cloud9 vs. Gankstars: Cloud9 Won

Certainly not a matchup that Gankstars was looking forward to, the potential results of the series were heavily tilted in the favor of Cloud9 coming in, and it panned out just so. Gankstars were unable to put up a strong showing against Cloud9 who would take the series 2-0.

#Semifinals: Tribe Gaming vs. Cloud9: Cloud9 Won

Tribe Gaming had an inspiring performance at the Unified Live Championships, but their seasonal play has not looked quite as fantastic, a typical condition of the roster of Tribe Gaming. Given that, Cloud9’s victory over the series was rather likely, although definitely not certain. Of course, Tribe Gaming was able to put up a good showing, but Cloud9 eventually pulled away with the 2-1 victory.

#Semifinals: Nova eSports vs. Rogue: Rogue Won

Despite the fact that Nova eSports were able to cleanly beat TSM last weekend, Rogue had defeated Nova eSports just the weekend before. Given that, even with Nova eSports strong showing, the outcome of this series was definitely in doubt coming in. Both teams fought tooth and nail with one another and made it to a third game. However, although Nova eSports won the first match, Rogue found a second wind and closed out the series 2-1, cementing their presence last weekend.

#Third Place Series: Nova eSports vs. Tribe Gaming: Tribe Gaming Won

Nova eSports had done excellently last weekend overall, keeping up with Rogue and closing out the series on TSM resoundingly well. However, in terms of consistency, Tribe Gaming would certainly be ranked higher than Nova eSports, even given that they are lacking their “live buff.” As such, Tribe Gaming did eventually beat out Nova eSports 2-1.

#Finals: Cloud9 vs. Rogue: Cloud9 Won

Rogue making it to the finals has very rarely occurred, and certainly not very recently. However, given that they were facing Cloud9, one of the consistently strongest teams in North America, their success seemed a bit dubious in the face of a very hard matchup. Indeed, the matchup would go as expected, but not without Rogue putting up a good fight against the long-established North American Giants.
