He knows these threats aren't doing anything to North Korea. He isn't even thinking about North Korea when he makes them. He knows he's scaring Americans and it makes him feel good. The man is fucking evil and he needs to go.

One of his methods during the campaign was to scare people, and to tell them only he could keep them safe; by making sure the American people are scared, he can try to maintain that facade. Though, given the polls that are coming out, most people are thinking the opposite.

I don't think it's about his approval or chances for re-election though. I think this was the endgame all along. He's been insecure and scared his entire life and he's livid that other people are able to be happy when he's never been able to be. He's using his position to make people feel as shitty as he does, and any good feeling he gets out of it is just because he's convincing himself he's "getting even".
The actually terrifying thing about it is that, for a person like him, this likely extends to the fact he knows he's old and doesn't have many years to live. He probably sees it as incredibly unfair that other people get to keep on living when he can't. He's got the opportunity to make sure we don't now that he's got his finger on the proverbial nuclear button. It's been said many times, but it bears repeating as there's always someone to come in and go "now hold on". Bob Mueller needs to hurry the fuck up.
