Gaming performance - fall creators update.

Gaming

Hey guys, please let us know if you had some performance boost in games. My fps are lower since the creators update and they promised fixes for this release. Post your tests/benchmark here, will post mine soon.

they specifically mentioned gaming on 6 and 8 core cpus (ryzen) so that will be cool to see.

TrevorX5J9•

cpus (r

The FX-8000 and FX-6000 series both had 6 and 8 core CPUs also.

13
Davidmurcianiko•

But based on the bulldozer microarchitecture crap, rather worse than the new ryzen (microarchiecture zen), Jim keller powah

13
TrevorX5J9•

I mean yeah bulldozer is crap, but it'll see some type of performance benefit perhaps?

10
Eagle1337•

The core design is also a ton different, ryzen is kind of like 2 CPUs mashed into 1, I don't think bulldozer did their core layout that way. I imagine that the benefit they did with ryzen is to stop things from using multiple other cores not on the same ccx.

4
Davidmurcianiko•

I think that yep maybe a little performance profit :)

1
PM_ME-DAT-ASS•

calling them cores is being generous

3
soZehhOP•

Only for these cpus? Can't be real. My fps are noticeably worse since this damn creators update.

5
bobloadmire•

the OG creators update or today's?

7
soZehhOP•

Original one made my fps lower and more stuttering game mode on/off. Ill pray for good news for this update.

2
kelrics1910•

Should make Planet Coaster or Cities Skylines interesting on my 6800K. Especially Cities since it's a CPU bound game.

2
T-Nan•

And my 7800x!

1
MMOStars•

I'm getting a lot less stutter in overwatch after this update + getting rid off xbox dvr, can't say if fps is higher/lower since I cap it.

27
Chaotic-Entropy•

Is it better or worse than before the Creator's update?

5
MMOStars•

Less stutter = better, basically visuals are smother now and before the update they have been choppy.

6
Chaotic-Entropy•

I mean the earlier Creator update of the year. I found that the original creator's update cratered my gaming performance.

So is it better than what it was before it was hamstrung by Microsoft initially?

3
SagnolThGangster•

Yea they seem a lot smoother, just tried bf1 and it doesnt stutter now

3
kuemmel234•

That tip about getting rid of "game dvr" was what did it for me. Much appreciated!

2
ApOgedoN•

Highjacking this comment for visibility. The fall creators update installed an AMD video card driver that has worse performance. Didn't expect this and took me a while to find this out. In case of Overwatch you need to install 17.7.1 for best results.

1
9777•

I got rid of the stuttering in FCU by completely deleting files related to Game DVR, not just disabling it. Worked!

14
mco2vie•

fix work well thanks

May I ask which files did you delete?

So you put the whole code from the ( to ) in a .bat file and run it as admin? I dont want to get the same problem as u/He110_W0r1d

This is my .bat:

Surprisingly improved things!

He110_W0r1d•

I tried running the script through powershell(admin) and it returned me a lot of errors. How did you manage to run it? Thanks!

1
9777•

Weird. I copied everything into a .bat, right clicked it and ran as admin. No errors here :/

1
retolx•

I used the tweak as well, and it fixed it. But it also disabled services needed to log in to xbox app (and therefore to play games like Forza Horizon 3). Enabling some of those services fixed that issue and stutters didn't come back.

Yesterday I found a post by a user of tenforums who found a simple registry tweak to disable Gamebarpresencewriter.exe from loading whenever you start a game. I tried this on a clean install today, and it works as well as the batch file found below without actually disabling system services, scheduled tasks and deleting system components executables. As such it's much cleaner fix and very easy to revert back (just changing value back to 1).

https://www.tenforums.com/gaming/83628-disabled-gamebar-gamemode-gamedvr-every-way-possible-yet.html#post1172338

The fix is as easy as https://i.imgur.com/zlLPety.gifv

Even easier, the automated batch file version: disable_gamebarpresencewriter.bat

Fall update Anniversary/Creators Dirt Rally benchmark

11
archetype4•

No difference at all. Overwatch is still very smooth. GPU usage is also exactly the same at 120fps for me as before in starting position on the practice range.

8
soZehhOP•

Well overwatch is the game where i have noticed the most difference. I had almost 300 permanent fps before creators, now 220-290 unstable

7
Revve•

Same, i uninstalled the game because it went from 200 fps to 100-150. It was unplayable on 144hz and sometimes on fights it was like 70-80.

3
soZehhOP•

Hopefully it will get fixed with this update

2
Revve•

I don't think it will, but i will give Overwatch a shot. Update is %70 now, lets hope it gets fixed!

1
Whizme•

Did reinstalling fix the fps drops for you? My fps got worse after each patch after doomfist release and uninstalling didnt help. Deleting the nvidia shader cache gave me my old fps back

2
Revve•

It didn't help. I disabled Windows gaming mode and it fixed a bit of it but it was still bad...

1
MMOStars•

Try repair - https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7655 It's not a magic solution and might not help at all, but should recheck the game files properly to make sure you got all of the needed files in healthy state.

1
soZehhOP•

Already done these basic things

3
archetype4•

I'm GPU limited on this game at high frame rates, not cpu limited so I can't speak to that. My GPU performance is still exactly the same. It's a gtx 1060 6gb. With an i5 4690.

soZehhOP•

Schnitzelkoenig•

Why are you playing with uncapped fps? Overwatch ticks with just 63 fps and I know no display that can handle 300 fps.

-2†
soZehhOP•

Please no casual comments without any basic competitive or real knowledge. 240hz +250 fps are another level on high level scenarios - i got downvoted for this??????? What?

7†
Keydogg•

You are totally correct. Anyone down voting you is doing so without real world experience. I game with a 144hz monitor on games like CSGO and Overwatch and the difference between 144/200/300fps is very noticeable.

10
Schnitzelkoenig•

Well played. Very funny. :)

-2†
Maxdec94•

I suggest that you watch this. It's the most noticeable in Source based games like CS:GO but I actually don't notice lag in OW with 100-130fps (on Epic graphics) on 144 Hz monitor. However, I can clearly see a difference between 60fps and 72fps (half of 144) in every game. 60fps stutters.

It's not necessarily about seeing it, but feeling it in mouse movement.

6
ashrashrashr•

Nearly everyone who plays the game seriously uncaps or set a high framerate.

60 fps is terrible for your aim.

1
gilad215•

Getting stutters in Dota 2, anyone else?

8
tricolorX•

HI, this happens when you're all smooth and them somehow all of sudden it slowdown?? like a straight contrast 30 to 60?

so overall no real difference.

marts_sum•

Still get hitching in BF1. Not unplayable, just annoying and never quite feels smooth. Like something is always loading/caching. Same as this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3Nx6256Tws

5
Sunlighthell•

Well it seems I will do clean install of anniversary =\ instead of FCU ( I read FCU is a message from microsoft anyway)

1
marts_sum•

Yeah, I literally just installed 1607 again, getting quick at it now... not going back to any CU for a good while.

1
dusty-2011•

That video looked near-perfect to me. A couple of hitches in the very minor category, that's it. If you play the game on base PS4, you would get hundreds of hitches in the minor category every match, and dozens of bigger hitches.

0
marts_sum•

The hitches don't show so well in videos. Fact is - this 100% doesn't happen on 1607, yet on CU and FCU - it does. I have a powerful PC, I don't want to play it like a PS4. It can be smooth at high fps. It's the only game that runs differently so something is causing it, no idea what.

3
dusty-2011•

You're completely out of your mind if you think the PS4 runs it like in that video. Didn't you read what I said? There were a couple of very minor hitches. A couple. PS4 has hundreds of those in a match. And you get some pretty big stutters as well on PS4. And framerates constantly fluctuating between 30 and 60. In busy fights, it will be in the 40s all the time, and look quite a bit slower than at 60. In the video, it runs nearly flawless. And wayyyyy better than on PS4. You're just complaining it doesn't run perfectly flawless.

0
marts_sum•

I'm wondering why you're bringing up PS4 on a Windows10 page.

I'm complaining that it doesn't run as it did before, flawlessly - on PC!!!. Stop accepting garbage. Microsoft changed something to the detriment of BF1 and Frostbite games in general.

9
Snowdek•

My systems seems to have always vsync on now, my fps is switching between 30 and 60fps, even on firefox i notice stuttering. Used already DDU, someone got an idea why thats happening? It affects my whole system, not only in games.

4
windowsphoneguy•

That's the Xbox DVR, turn it off in settings->gaming

2
Snowdek•

You sure? I had it always off, but gonna look more into it, thanks

1
tricolorX•

yeah i have it off too

1
tricolorX•

this is exactly what it happen to me too. playing GW 2, its really annoying, and the mouse sensitivity is affected too

yes not only games when i have a app in fullscreen (Unstream) open in my second monitor scrolling a website start to stutter jitter, clearly a 30 fps drop

2
Snowdek•

Could you try to disable your second monitor? It seems to fix that for me, if im only using 1 monitor.

2
tricolorX•

i did everything, no solution so far. i suspect its triple buffering is disabled with the update. that's why this jumping all over the place

2
Snowdek•

But why are so less ppl experiencing this problem. My system seems to run a lot faster, but this jumping between 60 and 30fps is annoying as fk.

2
kb3035583•

Getting the same problem too. Not a multi monitor problem. Seems unrelated to GSync too.

2
DerMauch•

Is there a solution to this problem yet? It's extremely annoying.

Most noticeable in Firefox and World of Warcraft. Constantly jumping between 30 and 60 fps.

Already clean reinstalled nvidia drivers. Game bar deactivated.

1
Snowdek•

In my case, it´s related to my multi-monitor setup.

I did a clean Install with the Internet off, setting the same refresh rate on my 2 monitors ( or disable the second one ), deinstalled geforce experience, turning fast boot off, setting vsync to adaptive.

Now, it happens rarely ( 1-2 times a day ), but there's still no 100% fix that i found.

EDIT: A rollback would fix that too, until you update to FCU again.

1
VengefulAncient•

Don't know about performance yet, but what I did notice is that the scumbag update rolled back my Nvidia driver to some older version. sigh when will MS learn to not mess with our GPU drivers... (and mind you, they were marked to not be "updated" automatically by DDU)

4
SagnolThGangster•

I was wondering the same, also make a benchmark with game mode on vs off, i always avoid using game mode since it was introduced with stutter in the first year of w10..

3†
jantari•

Game mode didn't exist in the first year of W10

9
SagnolThGangster•

I mean game bar*

I've been having OpenGL performance issues on my Optimus-enabled laptop ever since the first release of Windows 10 10240. It continues to this day. The bug was submitted to nVIDIA about a year ago but it was never fixed. The problem affects all Optimus-enabled laptops running Windows 10.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/4ms3q7/optimus_users_beware_your_opengl_performance_may/

3
gnome08•

r/planetside is talking about insane performance boosts

3
mRnjauu•

Idk my fps is more or less the same. It is just smoother since CU was broken anyway.

Need to test cs go when I download it again. On anniversary 1607 it was smooth and on creators i had massive stutters and fps drops.

Probably people didn't make clean install for a long time.

Edit: 1607 is still the king

1
Wstrr•

I seem to be getting worse CPU performance with FCU. I can actually see lower fps in some games i play (Evil Within 2, Shadow of War, Dishonored DOTA).

Testing in 3DMark Firestrike and DX12 test (can't remember the name) gives me lower CPU scores. So Ryzen CPU's get a boost while some Intel CPU's get fucked? Nice work as always Microsoft. :/

3
thinktankak•

I'm also having issues with framerates. I'm playing crossout and my fps will go from smooth 60 to 30, then back to 60. I've done everything that has been mentioned as a fix. Hopefully they fix the issue soon.

3
thinktankak•

After installing the Fall Creators update and all drivers, the FPS was horrible. No idea how you guys are seeing increases. I uninstalled and reverted back my Windows and got amazing smooooooth game play again =)

I will wait till they fix all the issues.

3
PassingBreeze1987•

They specifically talked about stuttering. So you shouldn't be getting more FPS, only less stutter. They fixed one or two bugs, but I'm betting they still need to fix several more, and we might need to wait to the next big stable update for those (might be wrong with this, could be one the next cumulative, I guess?)

2
halotechnology•

Overall much improved performance in less sttuering

2
EpicRageGuy•

I run heaven benchmark from time to time, added 2 new ones for FCU if anyone's interested (R9 290)
