Answer to article's title: No one believes promises from any politician. Trump won because he was running against Hillary.
I don't know why you're getting downvoted. The few people I know who voted for Trump did so solely because he wasn't Hillary. They didn't like the man or anything he stood for, they just hated Hillary more.
Sounds like you know some “smart” people.
Yeah. Distant relatives who live in the rust belt. But Hillary is intensely unlikable and shady so I can understand why they felt like they needed to vote against her.

Paywall.
I stepped over a dude lying on the ground with a needle in his arm in Soma walking to my overpaid start up job, Explodingvandotapp, holding a $7 coffee. FUCK YEAH! AMERICA!
Funny how people are so willing to help other third world countries, but have no issue leaving their neighbors to suffer.
I post this in r/sanfrancisco because of this line in particular, which I think people should remember when they go about their business:
We did care about them, and most of us voted for a candidate that would help them prosper. Instead of joining with us to make a better future they decided to go all in on hatred, racism, bigotry, and general stupidity. The rust belt scum want to make money like us but they certainly don't want to work as hard/get educated to do so. Sorry your 60k a year job sorting coal is gone. Good riddance.

You act like I want to be in the same country as Alabama, Missouri or any similar hick state. I have far more in common with someone from Vancouver, Canada or London than some human garbage Trump voters in the south.
These people are the American Taliban. I wish them nothing but pain and bad health.
Have you ever been? Have you ever met people from there? Maybe had coffee or a drink with them? They are our fellow Americans. They could easily say the say about some snobby techie from San Francisco. I tend to think that people are people and that we really should work harder at understanding people who are different rather than write them off. We need to work to be less divided. Be cool and God Bless America

Preach it!
Oh the irony. But really proving what bitfriend posted.
true, but i kinda place blame on clinton's campaign, as well. they took for granted that wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania would go their way and when it didn't that's their own fault.
i agree that as californians we must keep holding on the ideals of progress from the last decade. unfortunately, if that means we have to drag everyone else from the muck, then so be it.
Right wingers steal elections through voter disenfranchisement and foreign collusion and we blame Secretary Clinton? Nah. Trump and his voters are literally traitors to anything decent about the US.
i'm not completely blaming secretary clinton, but her campaign does have some responsibility to it (though one can argue they are one and the same...).
voter disenfranchisement and foreign influence/collusion have been around for a long time; it's only recently that social media's made it far easier to get into the public consciousness. for a major political campaign to (what seems like to me, anyway) more or less brush it away and not do an equivalent push against it... well, that blame (in my opinion) does fall on the clinton campaign and the democrats.
i am far from being a fan of the pisser-in-chief (look at my history at how much i've commented against the asshole)... but there is blame on the democrats and the clinton campaign as well.
As it turns out telling everyone that an election is in the bag and that there's no way the opposing candidate will win is a terrible way to encourage voters to come out and vote.
She had a shit campaign, no message, her debate performance was abysmal, all she said was I’m Obama 2.0 with nothing to inspire people to get out and vote.
Trump handed it to her and she fucked it up royally. She assumed she would win and literally labeled a huge potential voter base as deplorable. Why would they vote fir her after that comment.
Good point. I know many people, like the calexit group, and rust belt people who really didn't care about them. Around the election, tons of hate was being thrown from both sides, and some seriously vile shit was being said.
