Barbell logic - Episode 23 Voluntary hardship
I've been listening to this podcast for a while. I found the latest episode very interesting, it is also applicable to things outside strength training.

Really enjoyed this podcast. I have been dreading my squats as I get closer to the end of LP and this was motivational. I really like the idea of voluntary hardship. Looking at joining Brett McKay's Strenuous life next enrollment. Thanks for this one, this is the kind of content I am looking for.
I’m a fan of this podcast, however, I don’t like the term “voluntary hardship”. As Scott and Matt talk about what voluntary hardship is, I just kept cringing especially when Matt began talking about farming out things that do not bring him value (which is essentially gratification). If you do things despite not liking it then it is hard. So if you have someone else do things you don’t like, then you are not voluntarily doing the hard thing. After listening to the entire podcast, I liked the overall message which is actually valuing your time and prioritizing it which may mean farming out tasks to get more return (whether that’s gratification, time management, bigger profit, etc). Voluntary hardship is a misleading label that should not be used for this philosophy. This is just my opinion.
Listened to this on my way back to austin from houston. Reynolds sounds like a fellow calvinist. Either way, I really enjoyed the episode. I've seem these types of mental improvements from SS spill over into other areas of my life. Glad to hear it articulated by someone like yourselves.

Thanks for doing this. Definitely helping me stay motivated through my LP and actually, finally do the program. Wife is doing it too for the first time and has completely changed her outlook and body and self confidence. Thank you, very proud of her and I. Also, she listened to an ep. of the podcast with me last week and decided she needed to learn about whisky/bourbon and I came home to a bottle of eagle rare. Thanks again.
Driving up squats and saving marriages!!!
Thanks for taking the time to let me know about your story. Did you two listen to the episode with our wives?
