it's certain to change, i agree. but the analysis of the talking point that has been in circulation since last week is entirely salient. it doesn't mean the tax plan is good or bad, just that the talking point is misleading.

if we want a better political system, we have to work with one another to see through the mistakes and deceptions of both sides to better inform ourselves. such efforts are not "disingenuous" unless one's genuine goal isn't self-education but party-at-all-costs.

That is very true. The New middle-class who makes more than 450K a year will have lower taxes under this plan.

Debunked was from September estimates. Troll alert

how am i a troll for linking to an article in the Washington Post (decidedly not a Republican rag) from today? LOL

if you read the article, it addresses your point directly:

Latoya Veal, spokeswoman for the JEC Democrats, explained how the number was calculated. The staff took an estimate by the Tax Policy Center, based on the GOP’s “Unified Framework” released in September. The staff then focused on the households making under $86,100 — the bottom three quintiles of taxpayers — that would face a tax increase. Weighting the tax increase by the number of people in each quintile, the staff came up with an average tax hike of $794 for the people receiving a tax increase.

But notice the funny thing about this calculation: Only a small percentage (6.5 percent) of the nearly 122 million households in the bottom three quintiles will actually face a tax increase.

Meanwhile, more than 97 million (80 percent) will receive a tax cut. Doing the math the same way the JEC staff did, we come up with an average tax cut of about $450 for those 97 million households.

Indeed, at the far end of the chart, you will see that every quintile on average receives a tax cut — not a tax increase.

this is just a poor talking point that's been unfortunately circulated. both parties do this all the time.

i understand civility is in very short supply on reddit when it comes to politics these days. but surely we can address issues fairly and honestly with one another, knowing that no one is Washington is a particularly good truth-teller, for our own mutual benefit.

I think once all the details are know it will be about what we expected. Tax cuts for the rich and corporations that are significant. Moderate to no tax cuts for the middle class. And the loopholes that are eliminated will largely affect the middle/upper middle class, not the rich and super rich. There will also be some screwing of blue states.

that may well be, i agree.

but of course that doesn't make the talking point an honest one.

Ironic as the article is the one with the false claims

I'm sure I will hate the GOP tax plan too (haven't had a chance to read much of anything on it yet) but the fact this is downvoted and buried and derided in this sub in multiple threads is ridiculous considering how the opposite would be true if it was giving four pinnochios to a republican for similarly mis-stating something, even accidentally like this. Shit, your reaction to this article is probably more interesting than the article. Just because those senators got something wrong doesn't invalidate all the other arguments they've made, or make them terrible people, or magically make the tax plan a good plan. The Washington Post is not intentionally trolling you, nor is (I think) the submitter. Sometimes people say things that aren't true accidentally. Even the people you like or who you think are on 'your team'. If you start screaming 'lalalalala' whenever you see/hear news you don't like, you start to remind me of someone I have less than zero respect for.

Anyway, I like the Washington Post. They do news and stuff. If they did not report shit like this, they wouldn't be doing what they are supposed to do. I am more pro-free press than I am pro [insert my team here]. Just...don't be as bad as the other team if your into that sort of thinking.

amen! this is how a free press and curious citizenry can act together to hold politicians accountable to the truth -- ALL politicians, not just the ones you don't like!
