In today’s minisode, Karen and Georgia brought up how important and cool it is to ask family about their own stories! It really is important, because while we live in an age where we post everything we do and eat to social media the stories of our ancestors are dying every day with them.

Friday is the National Day of Listening. Check out that wiki in the link for some more info - but basically, take the time to sit down and listen to family or friends about their lives. Learn about how your grandparents lived and what they loved to do as kids, what was exciting in their town, what trouble they got into. You never know what cool stories you’ll find, and if you don’t ask you may never know.

Chances are, you’ll also get a really cool, or creepy, story about someone! I have a few about bodies stored in garages until the ground thawed enough to bury them (no cannibal aunts though!) and one about a snake bite that almost changed my family tree forever. This year I’m on a mission to find out how and why my great grandmother died before she was 30, and who my great grandfather really was.

So give it a shot! StoryCorps has sample questions and resources to get you started if you need help!
