Ooh, this is a good one. Better then the copy-paste to every sub, this one actually ties it into the sub’s theme. Nice.
I’m torn. On one hand, the flood is annoying to see when I want real content, and I live in Canada so no matter what happens this won’t hit us.
On the other hand, as annoying as the flood is, if Net Neutrality goes, there won’t be any posts, and it’s a noble cause, so I don’t mind.
It will hit us: Canada usually follows the policies that US creates.
In Canada net neutrality is a right, just like water and food. We treat the internet as a utility rather than a privilege.
Not to say that it won't effect Canada when all the smaller websites shut down from lack of traffic in the US.
Very good point. This is a global problem
I believe I saw a post stating Canada was planning to double down on Net Neutrality rules. We’re adamant on that one.
Do they follow policies that the US repeals?
The US has been trying to lobby Canada about net neutrality for years without succes. We surprisingly have pretty liberal laws when it comes to regulating internet.
Thanks man!
You're welcome,
I live in Canada so no matter what happens this won’t hit us.
Even not counting the fact that Canada could follow suit, this will massively effect how the internet evolves. U.S. content creators of videos, games, art, comics, basically any internet content you can imagine will be subject to the whims of US corporations.
Think about a indie game dev trying to start up and advertise a new game, but let's say EA doesn't want to people to pay attention to that new game because it's similar in content to theirs. They could just "convince" major ISPs to make it invisible to the American public, and thus it never gets a following and the game that could have been the next minecraft ends up abandonware.
Also, we're on your southern border, if this passes then basically corporations gain control of the media that Americans consume, and do you really trust American companies to push a better future for American-Canadian relations.
This affects EVERYONE in the western world, and I'm sure we'll see the effects even in the East.
Shit, didn’t even think about the fact that we use American websites. That does concern me.
Yep, and American services too. iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive? All mainly stored in the US.
Yep, and American services too. iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive? All mainly stored in the US.
Just for clarification, I'm European myself. At first this whole thing might seem as an American issue, but after they drop net neutrality, so may other regions and countries. Moreover, since big companies most likely will be paying royalties to cable companies so users don't have to pay to have them in their plan, services' subscription fees might change too. For example, Netflix might raise their subscription fees for world-wide users, so it can pay Comcast to not limit access to their services.
Right now, all comcast users have to pay increased internet prices so some people can watch Netflix. In my opinion, it makes more sense for the users of netflix to pay for their traffic. The repeal of net neutrality means internet providers could get money from businesses as opposed to consumers (which means lower prices for consumers)
Right now, all Comcast users have to pay increased internet prices so some people can watch Netflix. In my opinion, it makes more sense for the users of Netflix to pay for their traffic.
Comcast should provide tiered service then. Those that want to be able to watch Netflix would need to pay more to get a higher download cap. Those that don't would pay less to get a lower download cap.
There is no need to remove net neutrality to resolve this issue. In fact, Comcast already does this. Is this even a real problem or just an agreed upon talking point to try to oppose NN?
The repeal of net neutrality means internet providers could get money from businesses as opposed to consumers (which means lower prices for consumers)
It is cute that you think the businesses are just going to shoulder all the cost and not pass anything on to the consumers.
All internet should be charged based on data usage. Use more pay more. It's that simple. No throttling certain sites though, that would give an unfair advantage to larger websites with more capital.
I think that price based on usage would be beneficial to society and promote a more efficient use of internet.
This will hit American websites. Like reddit. Less popular American websites will go bankrupt. This affects everyone
They wont go bankrupt lmao!

I'm planning to build a pool house in my pool, and give that pool house its own pool.
Net neutrality is garb supported mostly by people at the shallow end of the gene pool. I love how no one wants you to really understand any details, just accept that the people freaking out know all there is. This is the same group of people who poured their hearts and souls into losing the election...tsk tsk
Oh boy you’re gonna get downvoted hard bud
I know, I feel it’s my civic duty to at least suggest to lemmings that the jump is a bad idea. Makes me wonder, has a lemming ever decided against jumping?
Protest Idea: MASS CANCELLATION DAY
Big internet companies are not fighting hard enough or at all for net neutrality. Remember when Reed Hastings from Netflix suddenly didn't care about net neutrality? What do you think about organizing a protest against their indifference/inaction with a day of mass cancellations.
If Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Amazon, Xbox Live, PSN, HBO, etc lost MILLIONS of customers in a single day with the promise that we are not coming back until NN is the law again, they would be forced to throw their full weight behind stopping this crap.
It could not be more obvious that our government is ignoring us while it inflicts great harm upon us for the benefit of ISPs. It's time to speak with our wallets to people who cannot ignore the language of money. These services will all be used against us anyway when Verizon and Comcast and the others can charge us extra or throttle them or just block them outright.
Sadly these companies and their money have more influence over our leaders than we ever will. We need to force them into fighting for us. You want our business back? Get on the front lines and put a permanent stop to this! Now!!
POST THIS MESSAGE EVERYWHERE!

Thank you. Please spread the message then. Post it everywhere you can. This is too important.
I canceled my Hulu yesterday since their parent companies are NBC (comcast) and Turner broadcasting. I made sure to tell them net neutrality was the reason why since they would benefit directly from the repeal.
I'm pretty sure Netflix already supports NN, because they've been affected by the kinds of things net neutrality prevents in the past.
http://www.cnet.com/news/net-neutrality-netflix-reed-hastings/
They softened their stance on it. I seem to remember that there was a bit of backlash at this news and they tried to act like they were on board again, but I don't see anything right now that indicates they are truly fighting for us.

PROTEST IDEA: Massive DDOS against Verizon and AT&T. Would prevent any new online orders during thanksgiving and cripple them.
Please note: this is NOT illegal. Making repeated we requests is like hitting refresh in your browser over and over again. Now if 100s of redditors did it, their websites would be hugged to death.
I wish I could call but for some reason I have pretty bad anxiety about this shiz.

If there are so many people freaking out about this, why did so many people vote for republicans? Vote for democrats and this is not an emergency that has to be dealt with at the last minute.
Because Democrats are terrible for different reasons.
Well, too bad. The people who elected this government still don't get to complain. You decided that discriminating against Muslims and lowering taxes on billionaires was more important than a free and open internet. You don't get to complain now about how you got exactly what you voted for.
Well, unless you admit that liberals were right and you were wrong.
You decided that discriminating against Muslims and lowering taxes on billionaires
Woah, there, that's a whole lot of assumptions.
Question, have you ever actually held a conversation with a conservative in real life before?
Sadly, yes.

Holy shit!!! How can we let the internet go back to the way it was in 2015!!! Remember all that non-neutral stuff that was going on back then?! Oh wait...nothing was going on back then.
Verzion was caught and admitted to violating NN protections this year. You can't seriously tell me you've been paying attention to any of this.
Pre-2015 ISPs were banning competing services from entering their market, they were throttling competing services, and they were traffic shaping entire protocols.

Verizon Communications Inc. v. FCC (2014)
Verizon Communications Inc. v. Federal Communications Commission was a 2014 U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit case vacating portions of the FCC Open Internet Order 2010 that the court determined could only be applied to common carriers. The court ruled that the FCC did not have the authority to impose the order in its entirety. Because the FCC had previously classified broadband providers under Title I of the Communications Act of 1934, the court ruled that the FCC had relinquished its right to regulate them like common carriers.

Here's what I just wrote and sent to their inboxes, feel free to use if you like it:
There is a very strong chance that you won't even bother reading this, but I cannot leave things unsaid during a time when such an important issue is going to be voted on. I have always been proud to be an American citizen, with our flaws and our strengths. This last year has been a shameful nightmare for the American people. The people in power and influence aren't even trying to be discreet with their selfish ambitions, and its the voters and citizens who will suffer for the benefit of someone else.
Net Neutrality is not some evil scheme by the Democrats; Obama is not some sort of supervillain whose wake of terror and malice has to be repealed and cleaned up. The diversity between the two major political parties in this country is worse than ever. Politicians don't care to better this country for all, they only care about their team having the most points. It's a disgusting way to live and it hurts all of us. This current issue is only the most recent disgrace to come to the attention of Congress to pass through. There is no advantage to giving a handful of major ISP companies the right to extort money for access to the internet. There are countries that have free internet service and there are countries that consider internet access a basic human right these days. The United States won't even consider water a basic human necessity, for the sake of a company that won't spare any expense to make more money.
Repealing Net Neutrality is just handing the keys to a daycare center to a famously aggressive and unsympathetic bully. These bullies want more control, more money, and they don't care who they have to harm to get it. The fact that multiple, countless fake identities were made to spread false information to promote the repealing of Net Neutrality should indicate that this is an evil, amoral and twisted idea that even its promoters are aware of. If this was good for the the people of this country at all, there would be actual support of it.
I am so ashamed to have to live in a country where the people are going unheard, and blatantly self-serving laws are being passed. Net Neutrality is one idea that was already voted against, and here we are again, begging and pleading for some rational thought and compassion to find the hearts of the people that determine the fate of this country that we all live in.
Are we citizens of this country, or are we marks for companies to take for all we have? Net Neutrality isn't even the beginning, but with every selfish law being passed that puts the boot to the necks of the citizens, we find ourselves inching closer to the end. This once great country may not even survive another ten years. I can barely see the light of hope in the darkness that grows greater every day.
If this law passes, and we the people are subject to the whims of a few greedy businesses, you may as well change “We the People” to “We the Corporations.”
For the love of decency, for the sake of a brighter future, for the chance that future generations may transform our country into a great nation once again, I beg you to see reason. Net Neutrality must not be repealed. Make me, and others, proud to be American citizens once again.
Our current president vowed to make America great again. He's going the wrong way.
Call 202-418-1000 it’s Pai’s office. Leave him a message

Piggybacking off the top comment to include my sample letter including the times ISP's have violated Net Neutrality from the r/bestof comment:
ISP's have been violating the terms of Net Neutrality for years, now that they've got Ajit Pai as the head and effectively finished their regulatory capture of the FCC, they can now legally get around the laws they've been trying to bend. Here is a list of times ISP's have violated Net Neutrality as a glimpse into the future without it: in 2005 Madison River Communications was blocking VOIP services. The FCC put a stop to it, in 2005 Comcast was denying access to p2p services without notifying customers, from 2007-2009 AT&T was having Skype and other VOIPs blocked because they didn't like there was competition for their cellphones, in 2011 MetroPCS tried to block all streaming except youtube, from 2011-2013 AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon were blocking access to Google Wallet because it competed with their own alternatives, in 2012 Verizon was demanding google block tethering apps on android because it let owners avoid their $20 tethering fee. This was despite guaranteeing they wouldn't do that as part of a winning bid on an airwaves auction, in 2012 AT&T - tried to block access to FaceTime unless customers paid more money, in 2013 Verizon literally stated that the only thing stopping them from favoring some content providers over other providers were the net neutrality rules in place. There is no reason besides profit that ISP's should be able to limit connection to certain sites and throttle connection speed to company's sites who don't pay for their site to be in the fast lane. The internet should be a free flow of information and exchanging of services, giving the ISP's power to decide what their customers see essentially gives them the power to decide what options are available to the consumer and gives these companies an extraordinary amount of power, and they've already proven they can't be trusted to regulate themselves based on ethics alone. The internet has inspired people around the world to learn skills, start and grow businesses , and even inspired citizens to stand up to authoritative governments. Please don't let this powerful tool for societal growth fall under the complete control of the corrupt.
This is just my sample text, change it and do what you want with it, just get involved, and send more than 1 letter or email or call to your reps.
Be sure to change it up at least some, don’t want to give them any kind of justification to be able to say that it is just robots petitioning against this
If you use more internet you should pay more! Stop deleting my comments! >_<
Stop making decisions that only benefit yourself people! Charging by data usage will create a more efficient less wasteful internet. Streaming videos and accessing movies uses electricity it doesn't just magically appear on your screen.
Why should someone who reads text articles online pay the same as another person who watches HD movies?
Reward efficiency.
I already pay for electricity that I use. I choose to use it and I pay the bill.
ISP’s and cell phone providers already have the power to set up different tiers of data plans with data caps. This is most noticeable with cell phone providers data plans. (Example: 2 GB of data for $20, 3 GB for $30, 5GB for $50, etc)
I have AT&T internet right now with a 250GB data cap. If I could pay less for a lower amount, I would, but this is the lowest plan that AT&T can offer me. That isn’t what Net neutrality is about.
ISP’s want the power to charge me the same price for the same amount of data, but then charge me more money depending on how I use it.
Basically let’s use your text article example. Pretend there is an online newspaper site you like, and it costs $25 per month for unrestricted access to the entire site. One day, the newspaper site comes out with a pricing change—$25 to access the site, but each category of articles now costs an additional $3 per month to read them.
“Well that sucks, Just last week I was paying to access everything. I liked to read one or two articles from each category, but not all of them..why should I have to pay an extra $3 when I only wanted to read one story?”
Now pretend the change didn’t come from the newspaper, it came from your ISP. That’s what they are asking for the power to do—charge you the same base price for internet access that you’re already paying, and then charge you extra depending on how you use it. If you want to watch one movie per month on Netflix, you’ll still be made to pay the same additional fee as someone who wants to watch 20 movies per month.
That isn’t any more efficient, and it isn’t governed by how much data you use. They want to sell you access to the same data at the same price as everyone else, then charge you more money while they tell you what you can and can’t do with it.
Edit: please help us stop this bill from being repealed. If you want a cheaper internet plan wth a lower data cap, that’s between you and your ISP. Please understand that what you’re advocating is for ISP’s to be able to charge us an undetermined extra amount of money for the exact same service and level of service that they already provide. I’m all for paying for better faster service, but not for paying extra for the same service with no incentives to make that service better.
It's not rewarding efficiency. The amount of money you pay to access your text articles isn't going to go down. It's going to punish people who want to access the internet including people who only read text articles
I just sent a message from the international options (am from Austria). Let's be honest, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft etc. is a big part of what made the USA what it is today. Even from an economic standpoint, repealing net neutrality doesn't make sense. Is it worth crippling some of the most innovative companies in the world, just to continue letting ISP's sit on their asses, doing nothing, not innovating at all, not even really competing?
I am really worried from multiple perspectives. As a citizen, this decision could set a precedent for the whole world. Other countries will follow this.
As a programmer, many resources, especially StackExchange (and therefore StackOverflow) might not be accessible anymore.
And as an Internet user, it will cause many communities, some of which have done so much good for the world, to vanish. It will cause many services to cut corners to even make some sort of profit.
The fight for Net Neutrality will have to be fought many times. And every time it is something worth fighting for.

I contacted my representatives, but I still believe the government will throw my vote away. Wat do?
We could visit their offices, or just continuing contacting them through different means. If you already called the FCC and your senators, you can also:
Send a free fax to the FCC from your computer using the site https://faxzero.com/ The FCC's fax # is 1-866-418-0232
Send an email to the FCC commissioners, particularly these 3 (out of 5) who are voting to gut net neutrality: Ajit Pai: [email protected] Michael O'Rielly: Mike.O'[email protected] Brendan Carr: [email protected]
Send an email to your senators. You can find out who they are by typing in your zip code in https://whoismyrepresentative.com/ Here are some scripts you can use. The more you modify it, the better:
[IF EMAILING THE FCC]: This is [NAME] from [CITY, STATE] and I disapprove of Mr. Pai's proposal to kill net neutrality and the strong Title II oversight of Internet Service Providers. Preserving an open internet is crucial for fair and equal access to the resources and information available on it.
[IF EMAILING SENATORS]: This is [NAME], your constituent from [CITY, STATE]. I ask that [Senator’s or Rep’s Name] contact FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and demand he abandon his plan to overturn Net Neutrality and Title II oversight. It is time for Congress to take a stand and urge Chairman Pai to cancel the vote in December. Thank you for your time and attention.
Thank you for the script. I've been looking for one and oddly googling it doesn't immediately produce one.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Net Neutrality. The internet is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical corporate law, most of the regulations will go over a typical browser’s head. There’s also the FCC’s capitalistic outlook, which is deftly woven into its characterization- its personal philosophy draws heavily from Adam Smith literature, for instance. The Neutrality supporters understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these regulatory changes, to realize that they’re not just evil- they say something deep about Ajit Pai. As a consequence people who dislike Net Neutrality truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the deep truth in Reddit’s existential catchphrase “Call and Write Your Congressmen,” which itself is a cryptic reference to John Oliver’s British epic “Last Week Tonight”. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Reddit’s genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, I DO have a Net Neutrality tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the Neutrality Supporters’ eyes only- and even then, they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin’ personal kid 😎
Shitposting I can understand, but dedicated shitposting is too much man. You need to get a better hobby. Maybe like World or Warcraft, or knitting house cozies or something. Something that takes as much time as this does.
This is a copy pasta
That White House petition needs a post of its own. No reason we shouldn't have already crushed that signature count.
This. I'm seeing hundreds of thousands of upvotes on related posts, but the petition is only at ~75k. It's super easy, but the confirmation email is lagging (hour for me this morning). Need to start NOW so signatures get confirmed in a timely manner.
This may be a dumb question, but is it possible for the companies invested in a non-neutral net to do anything to slow this down? Assumed it was just overloaded, but with the number of confirmed signatures it doesn't seem reasonable. If it is possible, is it possible to retroactively prove it occurred?
I still haven't gotten my confirmation email either. Playing devil's advocate, I could see this being an inordinate amount of traffic for the site and too much for the servers to handle, and maybe votes are only counted after the email confirmation. More likely, I suspect foul play. It's a government run website after all.
Fairly certain it DOES require email confirmation before counting. Glad I didn't get instant comments accusing me of being a paranoid chemtrail-type guy. No offense meant for those folks btw. Even those guys deserve equal access and speeds for their conspiracy videos.
How long have you been waiting for your confirmation??
I don’t think it’s foul play, I think their servers were overrun. I just signed the petition and the email came near instantaneously.
On the other hand, confirmation emails lagging means their servers are overloaded
Ok, was wondering if that was the case. Please pardon my relative technical ignorance in this instance. Let's assume that's the case then. With all the accumulated knowledge on Reddit, could we devise a way to queue in an organized and efficient manner to mitigate the issue? Like a schedule based on your date of birth with each month getting a 15 minute window? Again, pardon my technical ignorance if that's an absurd suggestion. Would rather be a fool offering solutions than a genius that does nothing.
Thanks man
While this info is helpful, we can’t just use bots to send these messages. They can easily ignore bot messages as spam, or worse, take it as proof that we don’t care that much since we won’t even take the time to send a personalized message ourselves. Whatever you do, make it a personal - a letter, an email, a phone call, ANYTHING. Just make it personal. Send it to your reps and the FCC. Show them that you give more than a nominal shit.
Edit: a word.
listening...
I signed the petition but the email verification still has yet to show up in my inbox.
It took about 10 minutes to show up in my inbox. Also check your spam folder.
I have checked spam, its been well over 10 minutes though.
Then I would just suggest to be patient. Their servers might be overwhelmed or something.
Am I able to call every day to say that I am against this? Like, would that make any difference on how many times I call or would just a one time call would make my voice be heard?
You are free to call everyday. Anything you do to voice your opinion helps.
Appreciate it. Gonna call everyday now

Thanks. Commented from Australia.
The two ladies (Clyburn & Rosenworcel) are already in favour of net neutrality, so contacting them would be preaching to the choir. It's the 3 men you gotta convince. I seriously doubt Pai will change his mind, so our best bet is contacting Carr & O'Rielly.
Should add this to your comment
I've written to both Clyburn and Rosenworcel thanking them for their support of Net Neutrality. It important to show appreciation for people's hard work.
I dont really want to give my zip code tho, why would you need it anyway?
So they can connect you to your congressional representative.
I live in Europe...
Sign the international petition. You can talk to a representative if you aren't being represented by them.
Thank you for posting the international petition. As a Canadian I've felt so frustrated at how little I've been able to help out today. I realize how little signing an international petition will mean compared to American redditors calling their senators and congressmen but i hope it's something
