I did a short playthrough of the very first public release of Dwarf Fortress, form August 2006, and here are the results.

Regarding the phenomenon of your enemy flying backwards, mentioned in image 12, I remember in previous versions of DF, weapon attacks could sometimes send enemies flying back insane distances. If you hit someone hard enough, you could knock them back into a vertical surface, such as a wall or a mountain, and have the victim explode into gore. Like, all their limbs would come off.
Also, cotton candy was universally the best material to make weapons with, even blunt weapons. Sending out a squad of legendary champions armed with cotton candy war hammers against a goblin siege was a beautiful sight to behold, you'd have gobbos flying all over the landscape and exploding into pasty chunks.
There are times when I miss being able to do that, for the sheer hilarity and badassery.
Wrestlers.
100 push ups, 100 sit ups and 10km running EVERY. DAY.
Don't skip leg day. 100 squats, too.

This is gone now? :< I haven't played in years.

Bronze was always the best material for whips iirc. Better penetration for some reason.
It's not gone, just a little closer to realistic. If you're into running and jumping at your enemies you'll see a lot of the same thing, I've exploded coyotes against trees before.
Yeah, you can't play goblin golf any more. Nowadays blunt weapons mainly kill by crushing the head and brain, or by causing enough internal bleeding to make the target bleed out.
Amazing how easy and also intricate we have it these days! Soon the reality simulator will be complete and we can all upload to it SOMA style.
Also, your animals fought for the same reason they would today; It seems you had too many restless animals in too small of a space?
If this were any other game it would've become x10 easier and have loot boxes.
Any other game would not have continued to be developed for 11 years and continue to be distributed for free like that, I don't think.
DF really is something else.
what is roguelikes for $500
There's UnReal World, with a staggering (and Guinness-record-setting) 24 years of development/update support. (To be fair, UW can be bought through Steam but is also available for free at its own site so I count that as free distribution)
But yeah, games like DF and UW certainly are a lot rarer than pay-to-play in whatever guise it comes in (secondary in-game currency that happens to be mostly available to "donators" and otherwise is sparingly granted but is rather crucial to actually playing the game; level caps; lootboxes; whatever they come up with next. Not that there's something wrong with a paid-for game in and of itself, just with the dishonesty of "oh this game is absolutely free to play! (so long as you didn't actually want to be able to do anything)")
Yeah, but have you played Slaves to Armok chapter 1? It actually had 3d graphics...
arm_ok was a variable from v1 (limb status)
Nice! This is pretty cool, never really thought of trying DF 2006.
tantrum spirals were the death of most forts, there were no z axis, every map was the same (river on the left, mountain on the right, followed by cave river, magma river, chasm and finally candy), sieges were much more common and overall it was just a much harder (for both fair and unfair reasons) game.
It was either tantrum spirals, or piercing into the bitter depths and releasing the FUN! The first time I did that, I was legitimately freaked out and barely went past the magma river after that.
I do love and even miss the simplicity of the earlier versions. Much easier to get up and running and not miss any important steps. Now there are so many things you really need, and you miss one step, and suddenly it's Disaster Control City.
I really need to make a checklist...
Urist cancels work: traveling down nostalgia lane
Awesome! First time I played DF was back in 2008, I think. I was looking for a rogue-like game, and someone somewhere mentioned it. I tried, but it was waaaay to steep of a learning curve for me back then.
Later, in 2011 (IIRC) I started playing Minecraft, and I read Notch's blog where he said DF was an inspiration for Minecraft. So I remembered about it, and gave it a try. I've been playing almost nonstop since then.
Aside from being a nice trip down nostalgia lane, it sure shows how far it's come in the last 11 years. Wait... 11 years?! 11 fucking years!!
Yup. And it'll probably be 30 by the time it's finished. AKA: probably a world record for longest in-dev completed game.
A game like this is never 'finished'. It just stops getting official updates and the community takes over. I'm expecting decades of forks and rewrites and clones when the official releases slow down. Think about the slow revolution that rogue created. Same kind of thing.
Fair enough. XD
I started playing DF and EvE in 06 and both give me that same 'where has the time gone' feeling whenever I think about them.
It's unfortunate that EVE seems to be 'winding down,' so to speak. It's losing players faster than it replaces them, with only a small spike for major releases.
Luckily, it seems like DF only gets more popular with every release. And it's not nearly as reliant on player count, obviously. I don't really care if I'm the only one left playing the game, I would still play.
The gameplay for Eve has gone essentially nowhere since 2010-2011ish, as CCP has been too afraid to make any radical changes to the game after the shitfest that was Incarna. The same old same old gets stale eventually.
Crazy to think I've been playing for 10 of those years, and I still love this game to pieces and come back every time there's a new release (and in-between!) and have so many stories and rant about its greatness to almost everyone I meet.
This game is just the best. Waiting for my Christmas bonus to donate to Toady!
