When this happened to me, my first instinct was to shoot a bunch more into the exact same spot. My frames tanked when I looked in that direction for the rest of the map.

This isn't the usual spot where this glitch is typically seen. There's an area inside a wall (where some cubes are lodged between the wall and the movable wall piece) - back in there, aim at the false door to the left side and it glitches every time. It's fun to try to spell out something before the game crashes.

This is Chamber 18 you're thinking, just at the start of the chamber, after you clear the first gap. Inside the ratman den, you go to the upper Level, and there is a false door in the direction of the test chamber's entrance elevator.

So, this is the first time he saw that glitch, and image in my previous comment is second, when he was trying to do it again.

Had the same happen in one of the hidden areas in that game, when shooting at an invisible wall above a small drop.

Huh, nice. I like the name, "Dimensional Rip". My favourite effect is Cloud 9, and it'll probably stay that way until a new effect like this gets added.

In the escape sequence in portal there are a few doors you can shoot that do this 100% of the time, lagged my game out with a ton of em c:

I saw this in my play through, you can spam it and it makes a snake that lags your game when you look at it.

i dont know why but any projectile that aimed to any door at any distance causes this

Shooting a portal at a door used to make the portal fire through the door, often landing out-of-bounds or missing the map entirely. And the entire "outside" of the map is portalable, so yeah, you could definitely break the game like this.
In traditional Valve fashion, this was the fix, lol

If you shoot at a direct spot at some gates and doors you can get that. I remember figuring out how to get that consistently but i dont remember it fully now

It's the doorknobs guys. When you direct your portal gun towards a doorknob and shoot, this happens.

Well, I just got it. Had Portal 2 on my 'probably should buy'-list, and noticed that you can get it in a bundle with portal 1 for quite cheap with the sale right now.

It flies normally, but it just does that when it lands.

Update: Tried to shoot the orange portal in the same way too, got this. I'm surprised that the projectiles have a slightly different shape.
The orange one reminds me of the particle effect around Combine energy pellets in HL2, maybe they re-used that.

And Turrets are just a reskin too. Portal was a super cheap throwaway game for valve.
Portal was a College project by students in DigiPen. It wasn't meant to be a huge game like it became. There's a reason in was made on the source engine. It was after release that Valve took over, and they produced Portal 2.
Edit: It turns out Portal wasn't the Student Project. Narbacular Drop was. Portal was in fact a game by Valve.

This crate is, afaik, used in all of Valve's first person Source games and a ton of Source licensees. I can't unsee it after I noticed it.
That's neither in Portal nor CSGO and I'm not sure about TF2.
Edit: It's really not though. That's a breakable and movable hl2 prop. It only exist in engine of all source games, doesn't mean it's used by any.

It's not about being good or bad. Valve made incredibly influential and innovative games once, even watching DeSinc's HL2 videos nowadays reminds me of how good HL2 was.
If Valve was making this on the side I'd be happy, but as far as we know we're never going to get an HL3 or Portal 3 or L4D3 or TF3. I get that they take their time with games, but the profitability of CSGO skins and card games seems to be killing any drive in Valve to make cool stuff.
It's a card game. Most gamers wouldn't want to play a card game.
It looks like the same effect to me, maybe with just fewer and more transparent particles circling the nucleus.
This happend on my laptop. I ended up shooting like 400 portals and the whole room was full of blue and orange befor the game chashed
Something similar happened to me back in 2015. Recorded it and loaded it to YouTube for an answer. Apparently it was a common glitch.
In portal one they have a different sound too
