Omega Fantasy - a Final Fantasy role-playing game system
Hello r/ffrpg,
I originally posted [this thread] (https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/7ojzpj/omega_fantasy_a_final_fantasy_roleplaying_game/) in r/rpg and u/BrunoCarvalhoPaula invited me to post here as well for discussion (thank you again!).
Today I would like to introduce you to a game that I have created over the last few months: Omega Fantasy, a Final Fantasy themed RPG system. I orginally created this game for my group of friends, who like Final Fantasy games, but are mostly unfamiliar with Pen & Paper RPGs. But after putting a lot of work into it, I decided to go the extra mile and create a version that others might benefit from as well. The system is mostly based on the Final Fantasy games, with some mechanics from 5th edition D&D.
What does this game offer?
Compared to established systems like D&D, it is significantly more compact (currently, single 30-page document) and much more accessible for inexperienced players. It also does not assume or require any knowledge or understanding of Final Fantasy, although most of its rules and content are based on the games. My goal is to allow players to run adventures that are like the Final Fantasy games: while some basic rules and recurring elements are the same, every adventure is completely different regarding characters, world, story and gameplay. The system is designed to only make very few assumptions about the adventure to allow for a wide variety in characters and settings. The rules are generally intended to be straightforward and not stand in the way, while still retaining the Final Fantasy "feeling".
What is the current status of the game?
This is what I consider to be a first playable version. All rules are complete and it provides enough content to run adventures. The balance of combat might be a bit off and the writing needs improvement. Future development will mostly focus on adding content (especially more jobs) and fixing the existing stuff.
What is planned for the future?
Honestly, that depends. If some people are interested in this game, we can maybe open a subreddit for it, where I can take suggestions and where we work on newer versions collaboratively. The future development will, as said above, mostly concentrate on providing more content (jobs, spells, monsters, ...). However, the main focus will always be to keep the system simple, accessible and to retain the Final Fantasy feeling. If there is no interest in this, I will simply continue developing in private for my friend group (which is much less work).
Anything else?
I would be glad about any kind of feedback on the game and will try to answer all questions in this thread. You can also ask contact me privately on this reddit account if you like or under the following e-mail adress: [email protected]
Some people in the other thread have found some wording issues in the document, as I expected. If you find any more, just notify me and I will collect them and release a fixed version later on. Other than that, I wish a lot of fun to anyone who wants to try out Omega Fantasy.

Solid work! I like the simplicity of it for sure, very easy to get someone up to speed. If you're interested, I started doing something like this a while back after I wrote an FF-themed setting for the FantasyAGE system.. would love to help with this project in any way!
Thank you for the feedback, I am glad you like my work. There are a lot of things that I want to add in the future, but this will be done carefully to keep the game as simple as it is right now.
At first, the things that need most improvement imo are combat balance (not tested enough) and writing (I am not a native speaker or writer). Next, I want to start adding more jobs (Red Mage, Time Mage, Dragoon, Summoner, ....). I have a rough idea what they will be like, but any help here is of course appreciated. Another important missing is a description of the monsters. Maybe an good solution would be include old-school 2D sprites from the games in the monster descriptions?
In the long run, I think what is really needed is a starter adventure (think LMoP from D&D 5e) to have something that new players can use to immediately dive into the game. I think it would be best to chose a setting from a FF game, but not complety copy the story or the characters. Example: the adventure is set well before the events of FFX and the party travels an earlier version of Spira to defeat Sin. Obviously all of this is a lot of work and I am currently not sure there is enough interest to warrant it.
It's a ton of work. However I would love to help.
I'll send over some of what I've worked on in this vein in the past (granted it's mostly all related to FantasyAGE. It's a d6 system too so might carry over a bit). Ive done adventures, classes, magic, and also a bestiary for FF stuff before so I think a lot would be useful to you.
Y'all remember to post updates. XD a single source to obtain these would be cool.
Edit: You know what, i have had my own ideas about writing a system/setting. I'm gonna sit down and start editing the pdf. I'll email you my suggestions.
Updated the link with a slightly improved version. In the long run I will probably end up opening a new subreddit for this game. It seems there are at least a few people interested in this.
u/cybersaliva has provided me with his work (thank you again!) and I will probably add some things inspired from it to the next major version of Omega Fantasy. I plan to keep all of the content in a single document for a while and will also post future updated versions to this sub.
