Dorn quest timer.

I'm about to go pick up Dorn after just having grabbed Edwin and slaughtered my way through many gnolls, xvarts and Dynaheir. Can/should I do the first part of his quest before I actually clear the mines or do I have time to clear them so long as I don't stop to rest after every fight (not that that would be nessicary). How much leeway is there to make progress before he starts getting annoyed?

Edit: all has gone well.

When you say the “first part of his quest”, I’m actually uncertain what you mean. Actually recruiting him arguably only happens after the first part of his quest, which is a not-so-random-random-encounter. After that it’ll be a while before he’ll give you the info for the next part of the quest.

I meant the part where he asks you to help him kill the necromancer. I'm not sure how long "a while" is before he trusts you enough to ask for help and if he gets agitated and bails if you don't drop everything and get to doing that right away.

If I knew "you have x days before he will progress his quest" and "you have x days from the time of his request to kill kryll before dorn leaves your party " I'd be fine.

It's not the timed nature that bothers me so much as the uncertainty especially since you need to factor in travel time between maps, rest time , time spent in battles etc etc.

I might be a little paranoid since in my last run my only time sensitive units were Jaheira and Khalid who were easy to satisfy by getting to nashkel and Minsc whose quest target was fairly straightforward and even then I got a warning from him because it was my first time and I was struggling to figure out how to actually get across the river on the map and to the gnoll stronghold.

I don't like the idea of having to go back to an earlier save and lose a lot of progress to prevent a team mate from leaving if I can plan out how to avoid that in the first place.

IIRC Dorn never gets cranky enough to desert you for not finding the target. I know because I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where the hell it was by dancing across a lot of the zones west of Nashkel, only to discover that there is only one crossing-point to get to the correct one.
