Why oh why can't we have a phone like the Lumia 1020 or pureview 808 again?? I can't even imagine what you'll get if you combine modern versions of those sensors with a modded Google camera app.
Stop talking about modded camera apps. The phone's default camera should be good. You can't make compromise on flahship devices paying hundreds of dollars only to install a modded camera app.
The bad thing about that is that people judge the hardware based on (what sometimes is) defunt software. The good thing about Android is that we have software choices to extract the most out of our devices. If you want the best "default" experience, then go for an iPhone.
The Galaxy series also provides an excellent experience, comparable to an iPhone by default, but if it takes a simple app install to get the same picture quality as the currently best mobile camera, something that isn't possible with iPhone, then why not talk about it?
Because you aren't paying for that. You are paying a thousand dollars so its the manufactureres responsibility that you get the best stuff.
Your example is saying that you go to an upscale really expensive restaurant for dinner but you have to self serve. You aren't paying for self service there are you?
By your logic, I should just stuck to the default manufacturer apps and not get any apps, even if they do better?
And how is that self service? I think a better way of saying your example is that you go to a fancy restaurant, order food, get that food, and it's amazing. But you had a better version of that dish, it just had a little bit of Salt added. So you're saying that I shouldn't even try to add salt with the salt shaker provided and blame the restaurant instead?
Nah. I'd just add salt, instead of being salty.
How is this result "Nokia’s return to the high-end segment"?
I'm pretty sure they're referring to the phone itself, not the test result.
Well, I presume that "high-end phone" implicate high quality camera (for mobile phones standards, of course)
Yeah, headline really belies the mediocre score.
A disappointing result, to be sure.
How did Nokia get such good cameras on their Lumia phones, anyway?
Two things basically:
The PureView patents that made the Lumia camera good are still owned by Microsoft.
Also, previous Nokia Mobile (Microsoft Mobile) famed Head of Imaging, Juha Alakarhu, is not directly involved with HMD Global in designing the camera for the current Nokia 8.
To be fair though, with GCam, the Nokia 8 takes pretty good pictures. So it's mostly algorithm at the moment since they already have good lens (Zeiss) and decent camera sensors.
I think they had a partnership with another company which specifically made cameras
You mean Carl Zeiss? They apparently partnered with them for the Nokia 8, so that can't be it.
Then even I don't know. The earlier cameras were from them, these are too, so what's the issue
It's the Symbian OS. Everyone knows that only Symbian OS has the power and efficiency to blend light from surrounding areas right into the sensors

Lot of money from Microsoft.
Nokia was known for their cameras even back in the pre-Windows Phone days back when they were pushing pre-Android Linux based phones.
If Microsoft were to start selling Nokia's in Microsoft Stores and partner with HMD for some sort of cross-licensing agreement...
Dammit Microsoft, should've done this to jump into the mobile game, progressively skinning more and more to differentiate with Android (with a separate app store) until eventually launching Windows Mobile.
I am really hoping that nokia can make a comeback.
Imagine a sensor from Nokia 808 paired with the ported Google camera with HDR+.
No thank you.
Are there any news on unlocking the bootloader?
The new Nokia it is starting like all of the new "startups" like Oneplus, but they use a name that they have to live up to. I believe that they have the potential to live up the name and become one of the best phone manufacturers but they just need some time. I mean the phones that they already have, may not be the best, but the quality of the phones, in terms of the build and how sturdy they are could be some sort of proof.
I don't own a Nokia phone now. But, if they introduce a true contender for next year flagship, they might be my next smartphone choice
Go back to moderating! Tsk Tsk Tsk
Good bot
They should have launched with Nokia X
Like UnidanX
Some nibbas are using the Pixel camera on it and reporting good results...
Hey you, reading this, i will like to tell you this has nothing to do with Nokia, they are using the brand name to sell you a generic phone.
Isn't this made by HMD, a company made up of a lot of former Nokia employees?
Yes
Hey you, out there in the cold, getting lonely, getting old, can you feel me???
Nothing to do except for the company made up of a lot of Nokia old blood.
Hmmm 🤔
Yeah ur wrong lol HMD is the real oem name and they are made up of original Nokia staff and employees so saying they are a generic oem is incorrect.
do you enjoy being wrong?
Hey you, guy who's incorrect, you're incorrect.

Final score of 68. 72 on photos, 62 on videos.

That's unfortunate.
Hopefully Nokia can improve that for future iterations.
iPhone 6 had a better camera than the 808?!
Better because you don't have to wait 5 secs to shoot the next frame. And when you capture video, the shadows are not just black.
Better according to DxO.
Yikes
Nokia is pretty bad at pricing tbh, they overestimate their phones.
For their midrange and budget lines, anyway. The Nokia 8 is one of the cheaper flagships.
I'd prefer xiaomi phones over Nokia, they offer better specs...
Untill you try to film something and the sound is absolute garbage.
Got my new 8 today for 360euros, that is not bad at all!
Nokia 8's 13MP with 1.12µm pixels implies quite small sensor (6mm diagonal) compared to today's flagships.
S8 has 7mm diagonal, computed based on imx333 data here (disregard fractions with inches, they do not refer to real sensor diagonal it is inflated value used for historical reasons, just compute dimensions in mm based on pixel dimensions and pixel size, then compute diagonal from it).
If Nokia 8 it would come with big aperture, it might compensate smaller sensor somewhat, but with f/2.0 it won't be great. S8 has f/1.7 so it has both advantage in both aperture and sensor size.
