How can I improve my trade income? Current home node is Astrakhan and the merchants steer from Samarkand and Kashmir towards that node. Thought to move the trade capital to either Novgorod or Crimea, since I do not wish to conquer the Ottomans yet.

Novgorod is a better node. You have some Baltic provinces and you can push farther west with relative ease to reduce trade succage.

I HIGHLY recommend taking trade ideas as a horde (or any country) in Central Asia/Eastern Europe. Eventually you'll be pushing trade from Beijing to St. Petersburg and making buckets of ducats.

ALSO, Persia is a very valuable node so you might be better off just collecting there instead of steering from Kashmir, which is an underwhelming node in my experience. Play with it, see what works. Again, take trade ideas. Conquer India for more merchants.

Thanks! Was planning on taking trade ideas eventually, but am currently running Humanist, Influence, Aristocratic and Admin ideas. Thought of picking a military idea next, but will get trade ideas instead.

Novgorod as home node, collect from Persia, and steer Kiev to Novgorod.

There's no need to steer from Samarkand since you fully (or mostly) control both of its downstreams. Collecting in Persia allows you to capitalize on all the trade there and catch half from Samarkand, while the other half heads home.

I'm assuming Smolensk is your subject and you're transferring their trade power to yourself, and that they are steering Crimea trade to Kiev. That should resolve what would otherwise be a problem of not having a merchant in Crimea.

Kashmir seems like a reasonable enough placement for your 3rd merchant once you get one, though also consider collecting in Baltic if you pick up more land there, or steering Crimea if Smolensk is letting Ottomans take too much (if you annex Smolensk then you DEFINITELY want to put a merchant in Crimea).

What was your strategy?

Bit late but the gist of it is as follows: basically blob in all directions as fast as possible. Raze all provinces that are not within the Tatar culture group (forming GH will grant you a cultural union) and try to conserve manpower, also note that wars can be fought on 0 manpower. Neuter Muscovy at the earliest opportunity, suck up to and ally Kebab to deter coalitions from forming.
