Might as well as shamelessly plug:
I made a video all about this. It's one part review of the film, one part examination of the role the Eva toy plays in the film, and one part investigation as to how it got there. Spoilers!

Cool video, I really enjoyed it.
So is Matt Greenfield just a big ol' liar then? I could be remembering wrong but wasn't Williams asked about Evangelion during an AMA and he knew nothing about it? Somehow, I doubt he had anything to do with the pitch and Greenfield was trying to lend legitimacy to the project.
I remember when I first got the Platinum collection all those years ago, he was pitching that live-action Evangelion movie, as if it were inevitably coming. I believe he said something to the effect of that they have half the funding already. Looking back, I'm thinking this was a desperate attempt by him to jumpstart the live action series and get himself attached as a producer. Obviously, it never came to fruition, but I'm wondering if they had any funding at all or if he made it up to make it seem further along than it really was.

I mean, if you see triggering the end of all individuality as a good thing, then I guess the MPEs are good and Asuka was just a selfish individualist getting in the way of progress.
