GPS coords acting odd

I am new to PowerBI and we are using the free version right now to test out the program before my agency looks into full licenses.

I am trying some mapping data I have, it's 83k points of crime data and when you select all points to be displayed PowerBI is rounding the lat/long data to 2 decimal spots only showing a portion of the points and completely changes everything. When you select specific crime types it displays correctly. I'm not sure what's prompting it to round those lat long coords. limit the points displayed to only the southern area of the state.

Some sort of processing issue? Like it can't handle 83k points? I use ArcGIS for my mapping currently but thought it'd be something to at least do a test run on.

Edit: From what I found it only allows up to 3500 points using lat/long

It could be the formatting of your columns. Try to edit query.

Is there something I should look for.

I'm really new at this, like I started toying with it this morning sight unseen and have gotten to where it's all plotted and even got time to work to show crimes monthly (had to format my date column)

Edit: Just tried to remove any unused columns that had junk info from our criminal justice system file. Still no dice. If i select certain crimes they show up fine but once I add a certain number it reverts to only showing ones in the southern end of the state. It's not actually rounding the numbers aside from how it displaying. It's just not showing the points above a certain point

It could be that your data type for the columns are fixed decimal number where you need decimal number. Go to your query’s and click on the top left corner of the headers to change.

Yeah the lat/long are set as decimal. I have realized it's not rounding the lat/long it uses to display on the map, only the lat/long in the tooltip that pops up when you look at a points.

It is just not displaying points north of a certain point for whatever reason once you select a few different crime codes

Well that's just fan-fucking-tastic... But it just let me plot 11k points for Assaults and displayed properly. My guess is they have increased the upper threshhold of plotted points but not quite to where I need it. Shall keep investigating

Ugh and I was really warming up to Power BI. Was so much easier to work with than ArcMap for the simple maps we would want to generate.

Still works great for the standard charts and visualizations but that kinda breaks any thought of me using it for maps.

I found one of my crimes with 10.9k pts displayed across the state top to bottom but another crime with 12.1k pts has an abrupt northern limit. When I try and display those together it that "northern" limit drops down farther. So I'm guessing it gets to X number of pts from South to North by coordinates and doesn't draw after that.

Thanks for the info! Sorry I couldn’t be more help!

I vaguely recall power bi only showing a maximum of 1000 points of data at any one time. This could have changed recently but it was a known issue a while ago.

I could be wrong though

Yeah I saw that. Appears to be hitting a ceiling between 10.9 and 12.3k points as best as I can tell. Hopefully I’ll hear back from Microsoft just to see. If that can be increased it’ll lessen my workload this coming year by a fair amount.

Decent mapping capability is something powerbi really needs to work on...

the move to a premium tier for Arcgis would be fine if it somehow became a premium solution, but it is still buggy - and the lack of a legend is a glaring issue. Not sure why they think companies will pay a per user fee for 60% of a product.

Thanks for the input, yeah it has real potential because of how simple it is to navigate vs full Arcgis. Was really hoping for a home run here.

I feel the same way, but I think they are using arcgis as an advertisement for their full product and little more. I’m not even sure the powerbi version is supported anymore.

Yeah for as much as my Arcgis license is I can't see them giving unfettered access to the interface for way less. So it makes sense... "If you want the full capabilities then get this software"
