Teachers in Arms
Shotgun!
A little brother calls out,
But older bro takes the front seat
Shoot!
Little Becky’s grown up so quick
Now her name is Mrs. Hutchinson
But she tells the students, “Rebecca’s fine”
She’s armed with erasable markers
Extra pencils and notebooks for the
Kids who came to class unprepared
Or from parents unable to provide
The resources needed to learn
Patience is a virtue, dealing with
Thirty sons and thirty daughters
Figuring out how everybody will
Succeed
There’s Paul and Alejandro,
The former who excels at math
The latter, a social butterfly
Both must be separated from each other
Else the entire room erupts in laughter
There’s Alma, Jess, and Matty P
Who make their texting hard to see
There’s Sally B and Freddy Suh
Who barely try to hide their love
And a young boy in the corner
Who the whole class thinks is a monster
There’s scissors and glue sticks
A chalkboard and history books
The stapler’s out of staples
The art hall is under construction
The weight room has a leaky roof
And school trips are reduced to two
The curriculum this year is riddled with holes
An entire chapter was lost to the snow
The constraints are tight, the budget is few
The principal knows, the government too
It’s bullying season, and class has begun
But no worries
Mrs. Rebecca is packing her fun
With her own thirty thousand
She’s purchased some pizza
For the children to eat
In the school cafeteria
And though she can’t afford more laptops
At least the state pays for her padlock
For the clip of bullets inside of her purse
She sticks to education first
But just in case there comes that day
She thinks of these things late at night
Where someone far from her will scream
“A gunman! A weapon is in sight!”
She ponders scenarios tucked in her bed
The nurse, Alejandro, Sally B: dead
The teacher meetings
Once meant for teaching, instead
Pay time and a half, for those who take training
On workshops that show how
To aim for the head.

Feedback is appreciated! Also I would like to know how to turn ugly hyperlinks like the ones above into something simple like "1" and "2" I wish I didn't say 'entire' twice and was wondering if anybody else got bugged by that too.
