The Vernal Covenant
Spiry steeples of an evergreen cathedral
His convocation row on row
Shadows in halcyon slumber
Alight untrodden, virgin snow
Oh, how I envy thy unwonted certainty
Of an azure promise for life anew
For his grey curtain has veiled her eyes from me
Which I mustn’t forget to be simply as blue
Would I worship here in sobered congregation
And upon his throne the sun?
Rather my frostbitten fingertips flaring and tearing
At every cloudlet until there were none
Yet each faithful limb doth bow
Beneath the weight of wintry crown
Hark thy hallowed hymn of faultless silence
May it deliquesce my deciduous doubt.
