Genesis 1:21
Why should it be only the children
who can squat next to an anthill as the minutes stretch out into an evening,
watching tiny black citizens form rings and rows,
share and scatter,
devour and build?
An encapsulated universe,
as clean as any we could ask for,
as complicated as a game which we have never played,
as lovely as our flaming sunset.
Offerings made to these little kings,
marveling as they cover the crumb
in a glittering web of darkness and hunger.
They pour out of their doorways,
eager to sample the gift,
and I am their benevolent deity.
They don't know that I am nothing, too.
They don't even know I see, think, breathe.
I am a force of nature for them.
Provider or destroyer,
mainly an observer.
I am fascinated, captivated, delighted
by this city of short, small lives.
