Early 2013 MBPR 15" SSD Upgrade Options
I'm looking to upgrade the 256GB SSD in my early 2013 macbook pro retina 15" (A1398). There are more options available than I originally would have thought.
I know some of the options include:
-
New/used Apple drives from iFixit (most expensive) (ifixit link)
-
OWC Upgrade kit (slightly less expensive) ( OWC link)
-
MCE Upgrade kit (more slightly less expensive) (amazon link)
-
Any compatible mSATA or M.2 SSD + adapter (cheapest option) (amazon link)
In particular the last option seems appealing, but I haven't been able to find definitive information on how well using an SSD adapter will work. I've seen some discussions online claiming earlier versions of macOS didn't support the third party drivers in generic SSDs, but that later versions (High Sierra+) may support them. And then there's the issue of SSD compatibility with all the different internal SSD pin layouts and what not. So looking for any experience or advice someone may have.

Don't take this as gospel, but from my understanding the OWC drives use RAID trickery to get them as fast as Apple drives. For end-users and nearly anyone else, this shouldn't be a problem. For techies like me who maintain Apple computers, they're a potential unrecoverable drive error waiting to happen.
I'd have more to say if I had actually encountered such drives in the wild, but have yet to.
