My shirt is one size too large.
My shirt is one size too large.
I try to hide the hollow
with loose fitting clothes.
I make sure I never lean
against anyone
or let them hug me
lest they feel that huge
gaping
hole.
I have to shower
when no one is around
so I can lie down
afterwards
and let the water drain.
I always wear a rain jacket,
that hole sucks up buckets
the extra weight
makes it difficult to walk.
I’m careful not to yell,
or sing, or shout…
that echo will make
people wonder
what that is all about.
Sometimes I binge
on too much food.
Somewhere inside my head
a voice cheers me on
as if I can race
and fill it all the way.
It just falls out when I get too full.
Which isn’t much.
I tried packing it
with some old socks,
packing peanuts,
and a couple of those airbags
that Amazon thinks will keep
my books safe.
Then I taped over it
with that cloth athletic tape
so it would stay neatly together
and I’d feel whole.
And my shadow would too.
But in just a few days the tape peeled;
the packing protruded in cancerous shapes.
The smell… it was too much for anyone.
I spent a whole year once
combing medical tomes
deep in musty libraries.
I even tried that online thing
that makes you certain you have
“that disease” you happen
to be reading about.
Just like me, the results were
hollow.
So now I speak kinda soft.
I don’t get too close.
I never expose any parts of me.
Every month or two I reassess
to see how much more I’ve lost
and lay awake that night
worried about the day
I’ve lost too much
finally falling apart.

Firstly, I enjoyed the way you've approached the cliché. Feeling 'hollow' is too easy a thing to use in a straight out manner, but here you've taken that cliché and leant a decent amount of ambiguity to it.
In the way of improvement, I would suggest that you look towards creating a loose conformity or repetition in your stanzas, which would therefore lend itself to a better rhythm in the piece. Alliteration and internal rhymes are your friends too, get them on board to improve flow and ease of reading.
I hate doing it to myself, but try to close out your internal monologue and imagine what your narration might sound like in the readers head. In this piece there are many points that seemed unnaturally snipped and certain parts that conjure a complete change of style and voice in my mind.
Otherwise, keep up the good work!
