Tomorrow begins my first sober vacation.....

I do not ever remember going on a vacation without drinking and I am 54 years young. My husband does not drink but we are meeting up with my sister and her family and they are used to me being the life of the party. I am already suffering from anxiety imagining some of the comments from my family about my not drinking. I will not drink but any and all advice about dealing with snarky comments from relatives will be appreciated.

You know your family better than anyone so go with your gut on how to handle it. It doesn't have to be a drawn-out explanation of why you aren't drinking but some of the tactics I've seen recommended here are:

  • you're on antibiotics/painkillers/whatever
  • you're doing a sober March challenge
  • overdid it last night and taking some time off
  • simply stated "no thanks, not tonight"
  • "just not feeling like it"
  • "I haven't felt well lately, I better not"
  • "I'm working on my health so I'm going to pass for this trip"
  • "Ah, I wish I could but I can't. It's a story for another time."

Most of my family is supportive but over Christmas my aunt gave me a ton of shit about not drinking. For a bit I wanted to tell her to fuck off! But she's like most people when they're drunk: self-centered and forgetful, so after she was 3 or 4 drinks in she completely forgot that I wasn't getting hammered with her.

Best of luck - you can do this!

I told them 41 days ago that I was giving up drinkinking for awhile so I could lose weight. Since then I have decided to continue my sober life since I feel so good. I know they don't think I will be able to give it up long term but they are wrong. I like the "I am working on my heath so I am going to pass" My husband has even noticed that I have been jumpy for the past few weeks just thinking about being with extended family for a week. Glad I have him for support.

I heard a new one the other day - a friend said “I’m only allowed to drink if I’m under 200lbs.” He’s like 250 now.

But if you don’t want to lie - we’re all pulling for you! It’s a totally valid life choice even if people want to be assholes about it. Someone in here told me that when people give you shit it’s often because they are self conscious of their own drinking. I think it’s true.

Good luck!!🍀👍 hang in there!!!

I read this yesterday and I liked it. It’s not anything mind-blowing really, but it’s helpful and I liked it. It’s a good reminder about doing our thing no matter what other people may think, do, or say about any of it. 🔆 I hope you’re proud of yourself, we all won’t drink with you on your vacation, so you’ve got company!

Congrats! Do it just like everything else: experience though a new lens and seize the opportunity to embrace in your sobriety. You’ll love it! Wake up early, have longer more rewarding days!
