A 50/50 season

I’m excited for the season starting so I’m doing a little shitposting. My question is. Do you think a 50HR/50SB season is possible? If so who do you think has the best chance? And who do you think has come closest?

Mike Trout

Not just circlejerking either (ok maybe a little). Awesome combination of speed and power. If anyone has a shot it's him.

I could see him getting 50 if he had better hitters behind him. If he had a Stanton behind him maybe the pitcher and catcher would be a tad bit too focused on the hitter and sort of forget about Trout. Also, Trout isn't a 50 HR hitter anyways IMO.

Analytics has made the 40/40 plus guys a thing of the past IMO. But Trout rarely gets caught stealing so

Yeah it’s crazy to think the stats he could have if he wasn’t mostly in the 2 spot

It would be crazy to see the money that gets thrown at him if he does it before his contract expires

30/30 season hasn't happened in 6 years. 50/50 isn't likely.

Best chance is probably Trout though.

Holy shit, 2012 was 6 years ago.

Tbf though, Trout was 1 HR away from 30/30 in 2016

Trout's for sure the most likely. Altuve playing for the Rox maybe? Mookie possibly. Ronald Acuna if my wet dreams are prophetic..

In my experience, wet dreams are anything but prophetic. Think about when Jurickson Profar was rated #1 prospect and now he’s our utility infielder. Still a little bit salty :(

Billy Hamilton if he becomes 2013 Chris Davis and retains his speed,

that'd be scary

yes

29 players in the history of baseball have had a 50+ HR seasons. Out of those 29, the only two to also have a season of 50+ steals are Barry Bonds and Brady Anderson. While I think it's theoretically posible, I doubt we'll see any active player today doing it, especially since SB has gone down.

That’s pretty close to my thinking as well. There’s no huge base stealers these days. 50+ in a year is big these days

Analytics killed the steal. It's basically not worth trying unless the player can steal consistently above 80% or something like that.

I think it's around 70% is needed to breakeven, but it depends on your team make-up and park. Someone on the Yankees is going to want an even higher rate to be effective, as high powered HR offenses in hitters parks make SBs less useful, whereas steals are more useful for a team like the giants. But you're right that stolen bases offer minimal benefit for most players. For instance, Vlad Guerrero got a lot of credit during the HoF discussions for stealing 181 bases over his career, and 40 in one season, but he stole at a 65% rate so his baserunning was a net negative.

The way the game is played right now? No, not likely. Teams are stealing less and less, and 50-HR guys are increasingly being protected in the lineup by elite power threats behind them meaning that the stolen base might not be worth the risk of getting thrown out and then the guy behind you hitting a bomb (meaning power guys run even less than typical guys, relatively). There are definitely guys with the athleticism to do it - somebody like a Ronald Acuna definitely has the tools, for example - but I don't think you'll ever find a good enough power threat with green light enough to go for 50 steals.

Judge and Stanton ought to learn to run faster then.

Jose Canseco would've done it if he knew it would be such a big deal...heh

Then he could have branded his own personal brand of juice

Well I can tell you what the odds of that happening are

I think Trout can consistently put up 40-45 HR. 50 is possible for him. I think he could get 50 steals but it’s not that likely. He had 49 steals in 2012.

Hitting 50 home runs has happened 43 times. Getting over 50 steals is getting harder and harder to do. I don't see it happening ever. Especially if the season is shrunk.

Trout or Goldschmidt

Goldschmidt will never even eclipse 40 HR now that the humidor exists in Arizona

No way Goldy steals more than 40
