As someone who visits the Netherlands frequently for holidays, I can add that we're not all scum.
(And you won't know most Brits like myself are even British until you try to talk to them!)
I visit cornwell 2 a year and i just love it. Especially the english people i meet.
Especially the english people i meat.
There's a minor typo here (meet), which amusingly makes this sound almost threatening! ;)
I'm very glad you enjoy the UK though!
Ha fast reaction, i edited it. My mom and dad love it also .. he even dares to drive on the left !
I'm surprised you pick Cornwall, it always rains on me terribly when I go there :(
(Please don't turn me into meat.)
Now you've gone and reminded me of the League of Gentlemen sketches at the butchers. "Can I have some of you're special stuff", lol.
I always see German tourists in Cornwall when I go there, pretty cool actually since international tourists are rare in the English countryside.
When I was last in the peak district I couldn't believe how many Chinese were there. Depends where you go.
Same with the Lake District actually, lots of Chinese and Japanese.
You can often tell by the shoes and haircuts
Perhaps a Dutch speaker can provide a more accurate translation to the article's title, I tried to translate the meaning of the overall article as best as I could.
The article is in Dutch: Translation link

Shame. That was the dominant feeling yesterday at Lance Roberts (48). According to NH News, the British have lived in Amsterdam for more than half of his life, but still felt responsible when he saw his fellow countrymen pulling over the walls drinking. To make up for this, he decided to hang up a discarded bicycle.
Robers saw the first British supporters on Thursday evening: "I went to pick up my children from the nursery and saw them already. Drunk and falling. At that time, I had the feeling that things were already going wrong.
The next morning he saw videos on Facebook on which, in addition to the usual beer showers and coarse choirs, a bicycle was also thrown into the canal near the Oudezijds Kolk. "The bike had two child seats and was close to my children's day-care centre. That bike could belong to someone who also brings his or her children there. Boathook
Roberts wanted to show that not every Englishman is a hooligan. "Together with my son, I went to my boat with a boathook and already a sloop, and we fished the bike out.
Robers didn't care that supporters were present again. "They were not too happy with that, but we ignored it. My son - who was raised bilingually - even liked the face of the supporters. The Amsterdammer is planning to put the bike back today. But only when the English have left. "I'm afraid they'll just do it again. Brexit
Roberts rests with AT5: "I find this behaviour so incredibly stupid. That nationalism, and it really has only got worse since the Brexit. I don't feel at home anymore in England. I feel at home in Amsterdam.
Yesterday, dozens of supporters were arrested during the disturbances surrounding the Dutch football team's training match against the British. Eight of them are still in prison.
Translators really improved a lot the last 1-2 years
With time, machine learning can get really good.
i spend a minute trying to figure out why you need a time machine to learn good..
deepL is connected to linguee.com which is a great resource when you need context-dependent translations. They've got a great database of professionally translated texts, a lot of European Union and other International institutions stuff
What does he mean when he says his son even liked the face of the supporters? Or is it that simple?
gezicht - means both face and sight/picture.
In this context it means that the son liked the fact that the English supporters were there, he liked seeing them.
OK thanks the help with that. Makes more sense.
That's a very nice gesture and I think much appreciated by the family that owned the bike.
Nice gesture but let us not forget Feyenoord fans in Rome and Psv fans in Portugal.
Internet has a way of making things bigger than they actually are. A couple of drunk young adults doing something stupid..
[edit] I got some pissed reactions and i wanted to clearify I was under the assumption the reaction from the english gentleman was about this https://www.reddit.com/r/unitedkingdom/comments/86l9il/english_football_fans_in_amsterdam/ clip. and my comment was based on this clip not the other riots.
Let's not play it down either. England fans have a particularly bad reputation throughout Europe. It's a minority of louts but an unusually large minority.
I remember in the 90s when Ireland first had a large amount of England fans, they absolutely destroyed the place and had to be deported in their hundreds back to the UK.
https://youtu.be/mBeDSFGzShg?t=2355
That wasn't average football hooligans though, it was an organised riot by a neo-Nazi group.
But there's also the overplaying it by some people and downplaying the hooligans of other countries because some people have an agenda.
Reminds me of the last Euro cup where some people hated England so much they literally thought all Russians were innocent. No mention from them all the other countries fighting each other, just got to focus on the English.
I remember that, fucking shameful.
I know but the example given on the bridge was some young adults acting stupid.
Also we have hooligans to it is not only an uk problem
A Whataboutism?? That settles it. I'm convinced!
Meanwhile, more than 100 British "fans" arrested.
Might it be that both incidents were really bad?
I was talking about the guys on the bridge.
Sorry if i somehow offended you
It isnt offensive, its dickish. The subject is about British hooligans in Amsterdam fucking up the peace.
And you pivot to Dutch hooligans, as if we didnt hear about it, or do anything about it.
Its a vile way of diverting attention, and not just to any hooligans, but dutch hooligans. As if to say "eh, these dutch are bad too".
To compare, Brits have a much larger problem with their hooligans than the dutch do. What was the meaning of your post?
Its incredibely stupid and doesnt allow progress. You hang on to the past. If something like this happens in london and dutch hooligans trash picadilly, and some dutchman pivots to "oh but well, lets not forget that channel incident by those brits in Amsterdam"
Its just a weak disgusting argument.
[removed]
Well in dutch we call your reaction ‘met gestrekt been’ (with streched legg)
Point made ok, i got it :)
England alone has almost 5 times the population of the Netherlands. Are you surprised in the slightest there are more hooligans on the English side?
Both sides have serious issues with hooliganism that cannot be ignored. And they are not unique in Europe either.
I'm not really offended, just slightly miffed by the characterisation of what happened in Amsterdam as just a few blokes on a bridge who are equally or even less bad than incidents with Dutch hooligans abroad. That's not really a reasonable way to talk about this incident or even excuse it as "making things bigger than they are", because we can actually quantify it, through arrests.
A couple?
There were exactly one hundred Englishmen arrested because of this.
I go by the Wallen every damn day, and I can tell you that, in such a tiny place, 100 people can cause a lot of destruction and havoc.
So no, this is as intense as the article shows, and these "fans" have made a reputation for themselves already. And saying "oh don't forget that we're not the only ones!" does nothing at all, because at the end of the day shit like this keeps happening.
As i understand it his action was after he had watched a short videoclip of a number of British people trowing beer at a passing boat (and later a bike) this was not about the 100 people that got arrested.
But I understand your frustration. Maybe our police could learn some things from the spannish guardia civil.
I believe that his action is based on both, because this was a pretty big story in Amsterdam. To the point it made national news (NOS.nl).
100 people getting arrested, inflammatory acts being shown like throwing someone's bike into a canal, beer being poured onto a boat, even beer cans being thrown. Plus, you may have not seen it, but there were heaps of trash everywhere you went not just in De Wallen but even around the vicinity.
The internet is not at all making it bigger than it is this time, this seriously was quite a shock here, especially for residents.
This was not just "A couple of drunk young adults doing something stupid", this was a mass of hooligans disrupting peace and potentially being dangerous (ever been hit by a beer can? it can fuck you up harshly).
