ETH wallet is too problematic, thinking of dropping ETH altogether.

Running W10, fully updated, latest stable version of the wallet. It's never worked well. Every time I use it there's a battle in getting it connected. I have to manually run geth.exe, press enter a few times, hope it starts downloading the blocks. After a bunch of manual intervention, I can get it synced. I'm tired of it. Fuck supporting it when I can't trust the wallet to sync. Does anyone experience the same issues?

So... if you're trying to full sync without a proper rig, you'll have a painful experience, last time i've check Ethereum was above 600GB

Try geth removedb (or manually erase the data) then start again with geth --fast --cache=2048 console (adjust the cache figure according to your ram)

you should be sync in less than a hour (depending of your bandwidth & RAM)

alternatively, i'll recommend a metamask & mycrypto.com combo

Thanks for the tips, I'll give it a go.

To make sure I'm understanding this correctly, for 16gig of ram the cache could be set to 13000?

How big of a hard drive should I purchase in preparation of PoS?

You can do that but from my personal experience i wasn't able to notice much difference with higher amounts (i think the bandwidth can act as a bottleneck here)

--cache=4096 should be enough

About PoS, the whole concept seems still experimental so i can't answer that outside of pure speculation.

PoS will be proof of AWS/Digital Ocean anyway! /s

Cool, thanks.

MyEtherWallet with Jsto file as private key; keep the key in a USB vault

MyEtherWallet actually works great, but I'm really starting to be put off when the official release from ethereum devs doesn't work reliably.

Ohh okay it doesn’t work now. So you’re concerned that it’ll be hard to gain more adoption or what? Just use MyEtherWallet..? I’m sure devs will fix it

Pretty sure the wallet isn't top priority right now.

Well maybe it should be. I find it pretty off putting that I can't just use the official client to do transactions, and have to use some stupid webui

Why do you necessarily need the official one? The Ethereum devs have other things to do and a wallet tool doesn't need to be developped by the Ethereum devs.

If other people can handle that and let the Ethereum devs implement other things, it's a time-efficient specialization that benefits everyone.

Maybe then Ethereum isn't for you :)

Are you running full sync? Light sync? Fast sync? What version of Geth? I have a modest windows 10 computer with an SSD and I have no problems with fast or light sync.

I highly highly recommend the Ledger Nano S Hardware wallet. It holds up to 5 different cryptocurrency slots, swap in/out with over 20 cryptos without losing anything, and it's the most secure cold storage hardware wallet solution on the market right now. Never had a problem with it, works flawlessly. I actually have 2 for redundancy. Just Make sure to get it only directly from the manufacturer: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-nano-s
