The Listening Poem
Most poems speak
Words meant to last through the years
Poems portray
Anxieties and fears
Most poems have voice
Such a poem never hears
But this poem listens
For this one has ears
“How?” You just asked
You questioned in your head
“How can a poem
hear the reader talk instead?”
“The writer can’t have
known before the words were read.”
Oh, but writers can
Even when they’re dead
Don’t seek to comprehend
Feel it to be true
Relive the rhymes you’ve read
That pulled and yanked you right on through
Onto the poem’s other side
Where authors strive to do
The thing I’m doing now -
Becoming one with you
And now that we’re together
Pray say just what you’re thinking
This poem will not tell a soul
It’s very good at listening
