Change your SteamVR controller models!
Here is a guide to replace your SteamVR controller models with any model you want.
Requirements:
-
The models you want that are SteamVR ready. In this example, the hand models used by u/Cyl0n_Surf3r for Skyrim VR here will be used.
-
The Batch File. Extract this anywhere and follow the Batch Steps.
Batch Steps
-
Extract the zip file from the link for the batch file above anywhere. This has only been tested on the desktop, so if issues arise, try moving the folder there.
-
Drop the files for the controller models into their respective folders- controller_1 for the left controller and controller_2 for the right controller.
-
Rename the main json file in "controller_1" and "controller_2" to "controller.json".
-
Run the batch file and press 1 and then enter to turn on the models or 2 for the normal models.
-
Enjoy.
Manual Steps
-
Head to the directory located below.
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\OpenVR
-
There will be two folders. Both have a "_1" or a "_2" suffix, they are for the left and right controllers respectively. Drag and drop the contents of "oculus_cv1_controller_left" and "oculus_cv1_controller_right" into the correct folders.
-
This is where a big issue comes in- every time SteamVR or OpenVR is loaded, the "controller.json" file gets overwritten each time. However, if it is set to read-only, it will not get overwritten. Delete the "controller.json" file and rename the "oculus_cv1_controller_left.json" and "oculus_cv1_controller_right.json" files to "controller.json."
-
Set them to read-only by right clicking them, then clicking properties, checking the read-only box, and clicking apply.
-
Load up SteamVR and enjoy!
Note: In the "white zone" or dashboard, the custom models do show up but I haven't seen them in Skyrim VR.

So you could replace it with anything? Like hypothetical, IF I wanted to run around (sideways) the Cliff House with controller/hand models of Mr. Crab's big meaty claws I could?
This tutorial is for OpenVR. If we could access the controller models for usage outside of OpenVR though, then sure.
