Anglicanism could be a much more interesting religious option.
This is the current state of anglicanism.
All Anglican countries receive
- −10% Development cost
- +50% Innovativeness gain
Religious actions
-
Divorce Consort 100; The current consort is removed. (This does not end any royal marriages.)
-
Marry Local Noblewoman 100; Gain a random female consort from this country.
-
Dissolve Monasteries 100; Gain ducats equal to 0.25 years of income.
-
Grant Monopoly 100; Gain 1% mercantilism.
-
Progress of the Supreme Governor 200; Gain 1 stability.
Both divorce consort and marry local noblewoman has near zero impact on anything and are there for flavor only, so we will ignore them.
It takes a long time to get innovativeness up even with anglicanism, and when you do it's not certain that it's very impactful. If you are also developing provinces, you're not necessarily going to get a lot of innovativeness.
Dissolve monasteries gives you a lot of gold, but it's also a somewhat ineffective power, since the british isles are one of the best places to generate the critical mass of income to make gold irrelevant very early on.
Mercantilism is a counterproductive stat for colonial england, and conquering england, and only helps if you're not planning to conquer anything. If you do use it, you also just create more gold, which you already have a better way of generating.
Stability is always nice, but it's also the only thing that is universally a good power to have out of all of anglicanism. If you want stab on demand, you should stick to catholic.
Let's reimagine aglicanism to make it better for all playstyles of the british isles.
All Anglican countries receive
- +1 Diplomatic Reputation
- +50% Effective Innovativeness
Religious actions
-
Develop the Realm 50; Subject gains development in one of their provinces with less development than your average development.
-
Hire Locals 100; Native Assimilation +25% for 10 years.
-
Dissolve Monasteries 100; Gain ducats equal to 0.25 years of income.
-
Grant Innovation 100; Gain 1 innovativeness.
-
Progress of the Supreme Governor 200; Gain 1 stability.
With an ability to get more innovativeness without being ahead in MP production, you can take the most advantage of playing tall. Coupled with Effective Innovativeness, you have a strong incentive to play to recieve that boost.
Because of this boost, dev cost reduction can be removed because you essentially gain -15% at max innovativeness. However, to make amassing development an even greater possibility, we can look at the first power.
With develop subject, you introduce a new playstyle of making a subject stronger, and gating it behind your own average development means you have to raise yours to raise theirs. This is a different way to make a tall playstyle more interesting. It's also interesting for a colonial power to raise the development in colonies to get back tax, trade power, and manpower, and force limit. You could subjugate ireland under one subject, and raise it's dev for "free".
As you want to play with subjects, you also get the diplo rep to use when your subjects have been fattened up enough. This also counteracts the negative reputation you get for being the only anglican christians in the game. Great Britain also gets diplo annexation cost reduction, so it's even better then.
Lastly, you could change the dissolve monasteries, and +1 Stab, but that's kind of beside the point.
The point is to make anglicanism worth picking, by making it have any strong point at all. This would give it one; A different way to play with subjects.

I don't think Diplomatic Reputation makes too much sense as the static bonus, as no one particularly liked what England did. +1 prestige per year would make more sense, as that is what the current decision Declare Statute in Restraint of Appeals does.
Prestige would be a pretty good alternative. the idea of 1+ dip rep was to make it easier to integrate big subjects, if you pick up the union over france, etc. Reformed already has diplo rep, but also unrest reduction, which you would be lacking with this version of anglicanism.
+1 prestige actually makes more sense if you keep the mercantilism option, since you're gonna be increasing the liberty desire a lot, so placating rulers would sort of work to offset that.
