Fall of Eden
I staggered drunk with hungered pain
Across the sodden ground
Cursing mud and weeping rain
I cried like some lost hound
My clothes were torn and ragged raw
My flesh was but the same
And soon beneath the God-sent storm
I fell in faithless pain
Black came the night with sulking clouds
And fainting specs of light
Yet through the veiled and faceless crowd
There came to me a sight
I saw a stubborn, shining tree
With fruit so ripe and red
The path ahead was warm and free
And soon I would be fed
I gorged upon the swollen fruit
Which sparkled cold and clean
Then falling to the warping root
There came a full-fed dream
I saw bright knights and ancient men
On horses bulked and black
Then came a man from some flamed den:
He cried "Attack, Attack!"
All men did clash, were thunder thrown
By swooping swords and shields
Distraught, I stood a man alone
In some forgotten field
And that is why I warn today
With my unworthy pen
For on that boundless night of pain
The devil cried "Again"
