State of the Subreddit: New Moderators, Survey Results, Flairs and Filters Update (REQUIRED Flairs on ALL Posts), Rules Update

DISCUSSION

Hey r/FortNiteBR!

We’ve seen the feedback on the last post regarding the length and format. We tried to do our best to make points short and concise, but we often choose to make long and detailed posts because of many factors (with the major one being sticky space — each subreddit is only allowed a maximum of 2 at a time).

I have added a TL;DR to the end of every section if you prefer to read those, though you may miss some of the details and reasoning behind our actions.

Since the last post, we’ve seen a huge boom in both new users and page views. Here are some stats about the subreddit

  • We’ve been averaging around 6 million page views per day
  • 5500+ new subscribers per day
  • 4500+ posts per day

The above numbers are great! However, this one is not so great

  • 1000+ post removals per day (please read the rules before you post everyone)

Out of the 4500 posts per day, almost a quarter of them get removed (thanks to our incredibly hard working mod team!), but even with all the removals, we miss a lot of posts due to the sheer volume of posts. We kindly ask all users to please use the “report” button on any post or comment that you think breaks our rules found at r/FortniteBR/wiki/rules. Reports are a huge help, and they assist us in taking action on offending posts much quicker.

To help with the influx of users, we’ve added a few new moderators. Most of them have already been actively moderating the last few weeks already, but we decided to add their announcement into this post. Please welcome u/dasoxarechamps2005, u/iDetroy, u/imtcce, and u/MasterGoat in the comments! Additionally, we may be adding a couple more from the previous pool of applicants in the coming days/weeks.

On the other hand, we are sad to see u/Soggydoughnuts step down as a moderator due to real life responsibilities. He was a fantastic mod and we wish him the best <3

TL;DR:

##Survey Results and Memes

A month and a half ago, we posted a survey that would help shape some of the rules on the sub. Here are the results

Raw data

Some quick graphs here

As mentioned in the prior post, it has been difficult keeping up with the many low quality meme posts. We posted the current meme rules and received a lot of feedback. According to the survey, a majority of users thought the best approach was requiring a post flair with the same restrictions. However, second highest group was no meme restrictions. These are virtually 2 opposite opinions, so no matter what we decide, a large majority of people will be unhappy.

Ultimately, the mod team agreed with the majority; memes will be allowed under the same restrictions (though we need to do a better job of sticking to our rules and not allowing exceptions when a post gets heavily upvoted) but will now require the "Humor" post flair.

TL;DR:

  • Results to the survey we made last post regarding memes.
  • Majority of users wanted all posts to have a post flair with the same restrictions. Second highest group was no meme restrictions. Virtually 2 opposite opinions, so no matter what we decide, a large majority of people will be unhappy.
  • Memes are allowed under same restrictions but must have "Humor" flair

##Flairs & Filters

*This is quite long so feel free to only read the TL;DR

The first trend is a heavy majority of you think that Post flairs should be required on either some posts or all. As a mod team, we decided to require ALL posts have a flair.

Our main designer u/MasterGoat has implemented a ‘toggle filter’ system so users can pick and chose what they want to see, and this feature can be seen live above the posts/comments sections where it says "Active Filters". Here you'll also see all of our currently available filter categories: Bug, Discussions, Suggestions, Media, Creative and Humor.

*Note: the Media filter will hide all posts with the flair "Media", "Streamer" and "Screenshot"

If you click one of them, you will be forwarded to a view of the subreddit which will hide submissions with that flair (i.e. if you click "Humor", it will forward you to "the subreddit without the humor flair". The little eye icons next to the flair in the ‘Active Filters’ bar indicate whether you currently see the flair (regular eye) or whether it's hidden from your view (crossed out eye), this is also reflected by greying out the filter. You can click on the flairs in the active filter bar to freely pick and choose if you want to add or remove additional filters!

Unfortunately, this feature is only available for our PC users due to Reddit mobile’s limited functionality. However, for other filtering methods for our RES users and Mobile users, or for more details on the magic behind the filter, feel free to visit our Subreddit Documentation which explains this system in detail.

When you post, you will receive a PM as well confirming that you will have a grace period of 30 minutes to flair your post appropriately, or it will be automatically removed. Requiring post flairs should assist all users and allow for better filtering.

*We will be providing a grace period for the first few days/week(s). Our bot won’t automatically remove it after 30 minutes, and all removals will be manual. The rule will be the same, but it won’t be automatic which means the removals might be a bit delayed. Feel free to report any posts that don't have a flair after 30 minutes of it being posted.

After you submit a post, you will have an option of 8 flairs to choose from to flair your post.

  • Bug - For newly discovered bugs outside the patch megathread.

  • Discussion - For your general posts about anything.

  • Suggestion - For all your in-game ideas, including game modes and low effort skin suggestions. Please remember that suggestions must follow our post title guidelines of no "Title Only Posts"

  • Media - For your clips and any other media that meets the promotional guidelines.

  • Streamer – For any post relating to a Fortnite streamer (e.g. Ninja this, Ninja that)

  • Screenshot – For all your amazing screenshots! (With the new replay system we look forward to seeing the amazing shots the community puts up on this flair!)

  • Creative - For Fanmade content, including 3D printed items, cosplays, artwork for ideas and high effort skin concepts.

  • Humor - For your jokes, funny posts, and memes that meet the meme guidelines.

  • Epic - This flair will only show up when an Epic employee creates a thread or comments on a thread. You can find Epic posts by clicking on the Epic Games logo under the header of the sub!

TL;DR:

  • Toggleable flair filter system and how it works
  • All posts will require the user to set their own flair
  • Pick the right flair from the list above
  • 30 minute grace period to set flair before auto removal

##Known Community Issues

In case you guys didn't know, Epic has made a public Trello board to track the hottest community issues that they are either investigating, need more information on, or have fixed in a future update! When you find a "new" bug, please check the Trello board or the most recent patch megathreads before making a new post.

TL;DR:

  • Check the public Trello board to see if Epic already knows about a bug and for the ETA of the fix.
  • Hopefully this reduces spam on the subreddit.

##Watermarks/Stolen Content/Clickbait

We get it. There are YouTubers who clickbait, Instagram/Social Media pages who steal content from the subreddit and don't credit the OP, and many reminders by fellow Redditors to watermark your posts. If you don't want your OC to be stolen by someone else on the Internet, please watermark it. Example of Good Watermark vs. Bad by u/Bromeek. Another good example done by TheSneakyBros (they make phenomenal concept art that you can see on Twitter @TheSneakyBro!).

However, reminders to watermark your work, watermarks that say something like "Not for <Insert YouTuber>", screenshots of people stealing from Reddit, screenshots of a clickbait thumbnail, or anything similar to are not allowed under our "Witch Hunting" rule and will be subject to removal.

TL;DR:

  • We know people steal stuff
  • Watermark properly (examples above)
  • Don't have watermarks that say "Not for <Insert YouTuber>", screenshots of people stealing from Reddit, screenshots of a clickbait thumbnail, or anything similar

##Server Status

You may have noticed a new "wifi" icon on the menu bar of r/FortNiteBR. Please use this button to check the status of Epic's servers before posting about matchmaking/login issues. We hope this will prevent the flood of posts in "new" whenever an outage occurs. Mobile users can access this link by tapping the "..." icon on the top right of the app and then pressing "community info." It is the first link under "Useful Links."

TL;DR:

  • Check to see if the servers are down by clicking the new wifi icon on the menu bar at the top.
  • Hopefully will reduce duplicate posts.

##Summary

You will see that requiring post flairs and enabling a stronger filter covers the answers from the survey. People can see whichever type of content they want, and ignore the content they do not want to see.

While the filters may not be perfect or to your liking as an individual, it is a strong first step to maintaining a clean, fun, and high-quality subreddit.

Items being discussed for the next subreddit update

  • Memes with only text relating it to Fortnite (currently not allowed)

  • Leaks (currently allowed)

  • Support Requests (currently not allowed)

  • Giveaways (currently allowed with Moderator approval)

  • Subreddit Wiki Revamp (this is gonna be BIG)

  • Twitter links vs screenshots

hey, lucky me! im on Xbox. I'll add you there!

RunisLove•

I think there should be a separate flair for memes besides Humor. There are funny game clips that can be labeled Humor, for example, that I wouldn't want to filter out. I do want to filter out all of the memes, though, because 99.9% of them stink. Please consider that!

All that said, thanks for the hard work and I think there are some good changes here. I hope the mod team gets positive results as a fruit of their labor on this. Thanks to all involved!

56
Dyklone•

I'm with you. 80% of the frontpage is just shitty meme's with the top comment being "just build". Would be nice to be able to have a specific filter that will catch most of those. Either way I like the ability to filter in general so that's great.

Glad you appreciate it.... took a lot of work and time :)

One quick question, I assume the answer is no, but flair filtering doesn't save between visits, right?

6
MasterGoatMODCSS Guy•

Unfortunately no, in the full guide (linked in the post) it states this. I’m trying to think of something a bit more permanent but unfortunately we’re very limited by what we can do with reddit, even these toggle filters are already working externally on my own domain.

For now the best option would be to edit your subreddit bookmark to include the subdomain of the filter preset you prefer most

11

I really don't think it's a good idea to use a third party site to handle link flair.

What's wrong with the standard way, using subdomains?

3
LYING_FEMINIST•

Sounds like a bunch of humbo jumboh but one crink so fuck it

1
MasterGoatCSS Guy•

Will do thanks!

2
YoJollyRoger•

I'm in the same boat as you. If missing out some actually funny posts means I get the low effort memes hidden, I'll take that trade.

1
Shy_Misfit•

I'm just happy people have to use flairs now :p

41
RagnaXI•

Finally can sort out the low quality shit they post!

12
GS_246•

I don't get it.

I hate the idea of flair in subs that aren't technical in nature or some kind of writing sub.

It just feels like putting posts in boxes that don't need to be.

People know the difference in memes/humor/videos and bugs/suggestions.

I really don't get it.

2
ThiccAsTheDevil•

That's not the problem. Whilst people know what the differences are, some of them want to filter out that certain type of post. Whilst I might know what 'We should have x weapon' means, I could choose not to see it in the first place, when it is flaired.

1
paulerxx•

Same

1
jkeefy•

If a post gets heavily upvoted, it should stay, if its not vulgar or offensive material. Its ridiculous that the mods are taking things like this down.

16†
opiecat579•

If it breaks the rules of the subreddit, it should be removed, no matter the amount of upvotes.

46
jkeefy•

Maybe the rules are too strict in this case and give too much power to the moderators and too little power to the community. After all, the community is what makes this sub great, not just the mods.

-9†

Eh... maybe four months ago and I’d agree with your comment. Place is a cesspool now. We need stricter rules and consistent enforcement of them.

26
likewhatalready•

This place is beyond a cesspool with garbage memes. I report so many posts per day to keep my front page clean.

15
erobert98•

I’d like to see the post you are referring to because I can almost guarantee it was either a repost or low effort. The community is actively going to shit with only memes and reposts being added to the sub, mods are doing their best to keep it mature and on topic. every other post is a complaint about the same thing.

0
asian_jim_halpert•

Lmao people like you are the reason this sub has gone to complete dogshit. One day people cry about memes and the other day people cry about not enough memes. Fuck glider memes and fuck vending machine memes. So unoriginal

24
RunisLove•

The re-hashing is the worst. Like, the first glider meme was fine, decent joke, but if it's going to devolve into 60 more shitty glider memes, that's the problem. People here are just too damn thirsty for karma, because there's no way people seriously think the 80th glider post is worthy of 1000 upvotes

8
Renovatius•

Nope. Absolutely not. There are way to much 11 year old dipshits on here who upvote the most low effort content because it has oh so random content. Watch me wet fart on Brite bombers face...Haha how funny.

Sadly this place has an overlap in users who fall for all the stuff on r/elsagate

18
puttehi•

I agreed with OP at first but you have a great point. I'm all for a community-driven sub but the fact that the most of the community are children and teenagers it really doesn't work in this case.

6
BakaFame•

What's the stuff with eslagate?

1
SelloutRealBig•

League of legends did a test run without mods for a week once. The top post was about garlic bread, because thats what got the most votes.

16
dabMasterYoda•

But that sets a precedent that rules only matter below a specific amount of karma.

8
PogbaToure•

Isn't this sub Reddit around because of the community? If that many people "up" something (meaning they like it or it made them chuckle) of course it should stay imo.

The rules should cater to the community at large and should be fluid. We aren't running a massive IRL society here trying to govern 100 million people and protect their physical well-being.

We shouldn't take ourselves too seriously.

-5
RunisLove•

so does the topic not matter? any content is far game? people say this without really thinking about the implications

6
PogbaToure•

I've always thought about it like this: each sub-Reddit is its own unique community. All the users that make up that sub are each part of that community.

People begin to feel a connection to that particular community, and value the opinions of other members. Maybe they want to get their opinion on something not totally Fortnite related.

Now, we already accomplish this with our Free Talk Friday stickied post, which I think is a fabulous part of this sub.

I'm not sure there are many examples of non-Fortnite related posts on this sub getting thousands of upvotes, which speaks to the fact that the community understands that yes, this is a Fortnite driven sub.

Maybe a good idea would be to keep the Free Talk Friday sticky permanent - think "Free Talk Fortnite". Have multiple sub-categories within to keep posts organized, and allow people who want this community's opinion on non-Fortnite related topics to get them, all in an organized place that doesn't clutter the home page.

-4
AnotherNub•

Taking popularity that gets influenced by the lowest common demoninator is the shortest path to things gradualling getting shitter, see every single thing that uses systems like it to decide if things should stay, like for example politics.

This sub would turn into a no effort AdviceAnimals meme posts, becoming an new facebook/9gag image generator, just this time for fortnite.

3
aardBot•

Hey, did you know that

-1
AnotherNub•

See? ^^^^animal

1
SamuraiKyu•

A post that says "sorry just testing something, will delete soon or u can remove" should never be allowed, regardless if people think it's funny to upvote and give gold to. I don't come to this subreddit for shitty content like that.

1
Canadiancookie•

Honestly, if the community likes the post that much, I don't see the problem in keeping it around.

-2†
CivilizedPsycho•

I agree with this. If enough people enjoy it, let it slide.

-11
Mag01uk•

How do you add a flair on mobile?

9
MasterGoatMODCSS Guy•

When you go to make a post there’s an option that comes up :)

10
SublimeBudd•

I was just asking another mod about this and can’t find the option for flairing my post on the Reddit app. Screenshot Any help?

2
MasterGoatMODCSS Guy•

That’s really bizarre, that’s exactly where flair post should be along with edit post.... let me investigate

1
Mag01uk•

Oh yes. Thanks

1
CivilizedPsycho•

Careful with this. Like I said in my comment the flair button often doesn't work. It will appear flaired for you but the subreddit and automods won't recognize it. To be safe, type [Appropriate flair] before your posts.

4
MasterGoatMODCSS Guy•

Hey our automod doesn’t flair based off title so that’s probably not the best safeguard but perhaps I can add this in!

3
Mag01uk•

Ok. Thanks for the advice.

1
SelloutRealBig•

i cant use the subreddit style because it clashes with dark mode in Reddit Enhancement Suit. Its bright white even in dark mode and it burns my eyes at night. It also shows half as many submissions per page so its not useful in that way as well. But without the CSS i cant show tags. Any chance you can make the sub's style more RES friendly?

1
MasterGoatMODCSS Guy•

I’m actually working on res friendly sub atm but it’s a lot of work!! I’ll put up an official post once it’s done, hopefully soon :)

1
SelloutRealBig•

Glad to see its being worked on, thanks! I hope it shows more per page as well. Currently without RES i see 10 posts at a time, but with the style i see only 5.

1
HolierMonkey586•

On Reddit is fun App I have had to create the post and then instantly go back into it and edit to add a flair.

3
Mag01uk•

I use the official Reddit app

1
redteamgone•

Thanks for the heads up, this works...

1
CivilizedPsycho•

I agree with filters, just make it so that a post gets auto-flaired if someone posts [Media] or [Humor] etc before their title. Although Reddit Mobile added a flair button, most of us mobile users know that subreddits never recognize the flair and our posts inevitably get taken down by automods.

Also, add the "Epic Comment" filter so one can turn off all other filters and find the things that Epic replied to.

Also also, add a bot that detects when a known epic staffer comments to autoflair it and post a link to the comment. Digging through a thread to try to figure out who it was and what they said can be a pain.

Danke.

6
MasterGoatMODCSS Guy•

Hey like it says in the post there is a button (the one with epic logo) at the top of the sub that takes you to a page with only epic comments. I’m planning on reworking this into the search page or something so that if there’s no epic posts on the front page it won’t display nothing, but for now that’ll do the same as an epic filter.

The bot is a bit more complex and we have someone else working on it! :)

6
TheAdAgency•

Is there anyway to make the Epic Response flair jump you to the comment they made, or some other automated post that can jump you directly to Epic's comments in a post?

2
MasterGoatCSS Guy•

We’re working on a bot that will sticky a link to the comments just like what some of the mods have been doing, but it’s still in the works.

I wish you could click on he “epic comment” flair but unfortunately that’s out of Reddit’s capabilities :(

3
TheAdAgency•

Damn, well thanks for your hard work regardless :)

1
CivilizedPsycho•

Grazie. Biggest concern is the reddit mobile thing, sounds like you guys got it covered.

1
MasterGoatCSS Guy•

It’s hard with how limited reddit mobile is unfortunately :c

3
TinyTimothy22OPMOD•

Point 1: We can do that in AutoMod! Will be a bit later today but will definitely be implemented soon

Point 2: Already have one next to the WiFi icon on the menu bar 😉

Point 3: We are in the middle of rewriting/bug fixing that bot. No ETA but it’s in the works

Hope that cleared some things up!

1
CivilizedPsycho•

Excellent thanks. I hate the reddit mobile app but it's all I use lately and the flair button it gives you has never worked properly. I get replies in every subreddit "remember to flair within 20 minutes!" even though on my end it shows flaired, so I can only post on subs that allow [Flair] and not just the selectable option.

1
Gprime5•

Hi, what language is the bot written in? Maybe I can help fixing it.

1
MasterGoatCSS Guy•

Python!

1
Gprime5•

Awesome, that's my language. Would you mind if I helped fix the bot, or atleast have a look at the code? I've written bots for other subreddits before and would love to see code from someone more experienced.

GreenBean59•

"However, reminders to watermark your work, watermarks that say something like "Not for <Insert YouTuber>", screenshots of people stealing from Reddit, screenshots of a clickbait thumbnail, or anything similar to are not allowed under our "Witch Hunting" rule and will be subject to removal."

While I may understand why you would want this to be against the rules, this is in by no means a definition of a "witch hunt". If you want to make a separate rule addressing it fine, but just shoe horning in something that doesn't even come close to fitting the definition is just lazy.

6
RunisLove•

It is, though. Like, throw "witch hunt definition" into google, and without even clicking a link you get this as one of the definitions:

a campaign directed against a person or group holding unorthodox or unpopular views.

The subreddit brigading against Ali-A or whoever, regardless of how annoying they are, is exactly that

Instagram•

My only suggestion was lower the opacity on that Epic Games logo when devs posts but that never happened ;P

2
Richiieee•

Memes are okay, they're funny.

What I strongly have a hatred for is the spam of Twitch streamers. There should be a different subreddit called "FortniteBRTwitchClips" or something. I do no care for what crazy play Ninja did. I do not care if Drake said he would donate $5,000. I do not care if DrDisrespect gets stream-sniped. I do not care if Avxry doxed someone on stream or if he threatened someone. I do not care if Dequan did this and Myth did that and Dakotaz did this. It's annoying.

2†
dasoxarechamps2005MOD•

We have a "Streamer" flair that you will be able to filter out.

6
MasterGoatCSS Guy•

At the moment you can only filter “Media” which does include streamer but also media and screenshots

I’ll figure something out for streamer

1
Richiieee•

How do you filter? Can it be done on Mobile or Desktop?

0
MasterGoatCSS Guy•

Check the guide to see!

1
RunisLove•

I do not care if Avxry doxed someone on stream or if he threatened someone.

This one shouldn't be allowed anyway because it's witch-hunting, but I don't see how something like

I do no care for what crazy play Ninja did.

is different at all from any other game clip posted here. I don't really understand how you could go to a gaming sub and want shitposts but not want game highlights, but that's just me. Fortunately, we have filtering now, praise the lord

0†
Richiieee•

Because unlike 99.9% of this sub I actually don't give the slightest fuck about Ninja... I watch his streams from time to time, but I don't need to come on to Reddit and see like 700 posts that are all like "OMG NINJA CRAZY NOSCOPE MUST WATCH". Sorry, but that shit to me is considered a "shitpost". Woah man Ninja trolled a kid and killed him with traps, that's great, not like nobody ever in the history of Fortnite has ever done that before. People ride Ninja like he's this Saint who does shit that nobody else can do.

I'm subbed to the subreddit for information on the game - weapons, modes, skins, server maintenances, updates, the future of the game. I'm not subbed to watch people ride the dick of someone who's playing a video game.

7
RunisLove•

So you're anti any clip, right? Why cast it as a streamer issue only?

-3
Richiieee•

Because I'm anti-streamer, not anti-clip? LOL...

How are you not getting this? I don't need to see the "crazy" clip that Ninja hit posted all over Reddit. It's really that simple. I don't care what Ninja did or said in his stream, I just don't. It's that simple.

6
momokidz•

2
TamarackRaised•

Will you guys be coordinating with the Mods from r/Fortnite to help build the overall community?

2
TinyTimothy22OPMOD•

A few of our current mods are actually mods over there too. What do you have in mind for us to collaborate on?

1
TamarackRaised•

Just facilitating discussion between the two groups.

Theres a huge polarization between BR and STW and I was hoping the mods would provide guidance/ do a little peacemaking to harmonize the user base and get everyone communicating instead of sniping and fighting.

1
RunisLove•

As someone who's been on this sub since week 1, I don't really know what you're referring to at all. This subreddit hardly talks about StW. The most common StW mentions here are just pleas from StW folk trying to get more attention on that part of Fortnite, but "sniping and fighting" is not a regular thing at all on r/FortNiteBR

2
TamarackRaised•

Glad you’ve had this experience. I’ve found the two groups to be fairly divided and territorial, but that might be a unique experience.

1
TinyTimothy22OPMOD•

We generally just tell people to discuss StW over there and they tell people to discuss BR here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#/u/dasoxarechamps2005

Hey r/FortNiteBR I’m u/dasoxarechamps2005! I’m 22 years old from Chicago (go White Sox of course) and currently at my first job out of college. I’ve been on r/FortNiteBR since the beginning and I’m glad to have the opportunity to give back to such an awesome community. Apart from this glorious sub, I’m fairly active in r/NBA, r/NFL, and r/PUBATTLEGROUNDS. This is my first time moderating on Reddit, so I’ll try not to hide in too many bushes! See y’all out there.

#/u/iDetroy

Hi everybody! I'm u/iDetroy and I started playing Fortnite around Christmas last year. I used to play H1Z1 before, but after the enormous hype of Fortnite I gave it a try, which was obviously the right decision x). Other games I occasionally play are CS:GO & Black Squad on PC and Clash Royale on my mobile.

I spend like half of my day on Reddit, and it's always awesome to see how creative some of you guys in here are. This place has grown so fast and I'm excited to see how large this Sub eventually will grow in the near future. So yeah, I am really happy to be part of the team now :).

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask them, I'd be glad to tell you everything you might want to know.

#/u/imtcce

Hey everyone! I'm u/imtcce (but people usually just call me TC). I'm a gamer from the land of maple syrup and monopoly money and I love to play: Rocket League, Fortnite, League of Legends and Old School Runescape 😤 😤.

I'm also s a moderator for a lot of Twitch channels including twitch.tv/rocketleague so if you ever have a quick question about something Twitch related feel free to ask!

Being given the chance to branch out of the Rocket League community by helping mod the r/FortniteBR subreddit is an extremely exciting first step, in hopefully, a long road of helping the Fortnite community :D.

#/u/MasterGoat

Hi MasterGoat here, I’m sure many of you would have seen me around the sub lately, probably also with “CSS Slave” as a nickname over my username. I’m one of the lead designers on the sub and have spent the past few months implementing toggle flair filters, updated weekly challenges in the sidebar, and other bits and bobs on the sub. Since I spend an extensive amount of time on the sub looking for new ways to make it better I’ve requested and been allowed to take on some higher moderation duties and will be helping out the team on the Australian time zones when the other mods are asleep!
