Sobriety
I long for the embrace of my lost companion.
The carcinogen coated cloud, poised to taint my lungs, allowing an ephemeral moment of silence in the volatile miasma of my mind.
The overpowering smell that hung in the air, like a guest overstaying their welcome.
I miss the way its oils coated skin, leaving a fragrance somewhere between colognes and cadavers. Like my grandmother’s house.
The strongest itch I could never scratch. Slingless David against cancer ridden Goliath.
As if a fever of the spirit, I ache for my guardian.
How it dulled and shifted reality. Exacerbated emotions to overload, a belligerent star against my sober candle.
How it coated my throat with bitter ambrosia, opening it to speak the words I would choke on. Relaxed my suspension cable of a body. Its warmth blanketing my insides, protecting me from my frigid world.
How, even the next day, I could feel my dial-up thoughts try in vain to continue the race.
Hellish angels offering silence for vitality.
