Trump didn't use ads because he did anything he could to be on news and in other media 24/7.

You have to get your name out to those outside the social media echo chambers

Trump campaign also used TV ads. Literally every campaign uses tv and radio ads (because quite a few people in this country aren't on FB surprisingly)
