matrix.org vs disroot.org for Riot?

I can't find any privacy policy on matrix.org, is it the same to use one or the other? Or is there any privacy advantage for one of them (or others)?

I'd go with disroot. Disroot has a quite good privacy policy and has the advantage of being smaller making it a less attractive target for people interested in large data collections.

Plus: the whole advantage for the matrix protocol is that it's federated, which spreads out all the (meta)data making it harder to trace. But that's only true if people actually use different servers.

There is also weho.st which seems good to me. Or you can have a look through this unofficial list of matrix servers.

Of course you can also host your own server which means that all your data is under your control. This is what I do.

Im using disroot right now just for auto photo backup, and Contact and calendar sync through droidDAV.

I would run my own nextcloud server, but for what I need it for Im better served to have something that will most likely NOT go down (as opposed to my shitty home internet).

I have to disagree, it's extremely vague. "We do not collect IP address" could mean "we collect everything else, but not your IP at least". Especially when some of their services list a lot more data points than others.

Not that it's a bad service (at all, I'm a user and love it), but it isn't nearly as privacy friendly as it looks. Email? They're by default not encrypted on the server, and are based in Netherlands which is a 9 eyes country. If the US govt wants your emails, they're getting them. Same for their cloud storage, you have to self encrypt it. I wouldn't be surprised if many of their users are lulled into a false sense of security seeing all the references to "privacy" when you have to do half of it yourself, just like any other services.
