A Sea of Color
Oceans of reds, greens, yellows and blues
Colorful tides rolling in and then out towards the comparatively colorless horizon
Flowing, floating, flying into one another
They swirl together forming a sea of color
A sea so expansive and full of so many shades
How could anyone understand them?
They refuse to be understood
They slosh and swirl and mix together
Forming even more shades of infinite complexity
They roil and froth and foam against the shore where I stand in awe
Looking out at this unknowable ocean
This unfathomable sea of color
I wade out into its waters and innumerable hues
It’s warm against my skin like the hand that touches your cheek
And lingers there like a memory
I still feel it there sometimes
It’s cold like the sharp edge of a tear that runs from your eye
Its steely wetness cuts you deeper than any blade
It never healed
I close my eyes and give myself to my sea of color
I do not swim
I do not fight against its current
I wish that others could see it
Its beauty
Its darkness
Its terrible, gentle waves that carry me forever out to sea
I open my eyes and it’s gone
