I Really Hope This Child Wasn't Real

[This is taken from a longer review of a weekend body positive retreat.]
Now, I'm not trained in the treatment of eating disorders but, whether the alleged child was underweight or overweight, I really doubt that telling her she needs to become a 'fat goddess' is helpful and could do even more damage, by either scaring them away from recovery by making them think that the only two options are severe restriction or morbid obesity or by encouraging continued overeating rather than solving the psychological issues behind it.
This is almost definately a lie, but to play devils advocate potentially the therapist was trying to help the child become more comfortable with their body. If your reason for over eating is that you feel disgusting and feel there is no reason to stop now being told that you have value regardless of your weight can potentially help you become happier with yourself. You then might start to take better care of your self and realize that you don't have to be that person. This of course could seriously back fire as then they might start thing well I'm good regardless so why change?
It's never a good idea to make comments about the body of someone with an eating disorder, whether meant to be positive or not. No matter how you look at it, saying this to someone with an eating disorder would be extremely triggering.
I’m $100% sure the therapist never even said such a thing, if any part of the story is true. Lol.
FAs are some of the worst most unskilled liars on the planet.
Yes, that totally happened! Everybody clapped, then Einstein told the child that she is a perfect uwu sparkling goddess unicorn.
Holy shit. That sounds like it would be triggering as fuck to hear. If a therapist told me that, I would probably be unable to eat for a week afterwards.
Yeah, i can believe the story was told during the retreat, but i think that's all it is a story.
Or perhaps it was some sort of Fat positive therapist, who either doesn't have official qualifications as an actual therapist, and the parent of the child took them to this person specifically because she knew that the 'therapist' aligned with her own agenda, or the therapist said one thing and the parent heard what they wanted to hear.
I really hope this therapist wasn't real.
I feel like this "therapist" received a doctorate from Tumblr University with a focus on Perceived Oppression
That is a very boring story. I doubt any amount of storytelling skill could make that interesting. It's less than a paragraph and nothing happened. The therapist started brainwashing a child with disturbing terminology. It's bad. What kind of person, especially a therapist, would say that to anyone, let alone a kid? Ewww.
So they(FAs) are now celebrating child abuse?
Nothing new, tbh. I've seen a couple of them stating that not allowing your child to constantly eat junk food is abusive. Also; Christina Corrigan was a young girl who passed away in (I believe) the 90s. IIRC, she was around 13 years old, weighed 700lbs and was found naked save for a sheet, covered in pressure sores and laying in her own filth. She also hadn't been to school or even left the house in months. Her mother was arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect. Marilyn Wann (famous FA) stood outside the courtroom and protested the arrest with the belief it only happened because the girl was fat and that, had she been thin, the mother never would have been blamed.
... What?
"Covered in pressure sores and laying in her own filth"
I sure hope that regardless of size, any parent would be charged with abuse and neglect if their child was found in this condition.
They absolutely would, which is why Wanns argument makes no sense. Her perspective was "if this was an average sized child, there wouldn't be a case. There'd be sympathy for the mother." I can tell if she's willfully ignorant or just kinda dumb - the charge had little to do with her weight and more to do with the horrific conditions in which she died. The only people making the case all about the girls weight were Wann and her crew.
What... I didn't know that. That's a whole other level of mental gymnastics that I do not even want to begin to understand.
Either didn't happen or that therapist was definitely fired right after.
Kids don't keep their sessions secret from their parents. And you can bet that if her parents took her to help her with disordered eating the last thing they want is a therapist encouraging that. Hell, if that was my child I would definitely contact whoever does the licensing for that therapist with some pretty strong words.
I hope I do hear this story with the name of therapist so I can report her for malpractice. You don’t tell your clients what they should want. You don’t tell your clients that self abuse is okay. You help your clients overcome obstacles and see what they can achieve, not that achievement is impossible.
r/thathappened r/fathappened
It's one of those stories you hear in real life that supposed to leave you awed by the end of it, but instead you find yourself going "What?".
If an ED therapist told me I was fat that would completely wreck me and certainly make my eating disorder worse. This is crazy.
Now, I don't claim to know a whole lot about EDs but I'm willing to bet that telling someone who struggles with self-image and an eating disorder that they're a "fat goddess" is 100% the wrong thing to do.
"...what we need to do is make you a fat goddess." What is WITH all the goddess terminology? Can we not be happy as mortal humans regardless of body composition?
this is especially cringey because this 'goddess' term (at least for me) always has a sexual undertone to it.
so who tf tells a child she's a goddess? (my bet: r/thathappened)
It’s also kinda condescending.
I have a hard time believing that a professional would use the word goddess to a client. If she wanted the kid to not worry about weight, there are many more ways to say it that a child would connect with.
Especially a child, ffs. That would be a weird thing to say to an adult woman, it's just utterly bizarre to say to a little girl.
You're special. Just like everyone else.
Deep-seeded insecurity issues. They can't think of themselves as normal people. They have to elevate themselves to God-like and deserving of reverance.
It’s a very important and necessary thing they do. That’s why they should be revered. Do you know how hard it is to gain weight? Screw the first responders, it takes a hero to be fat.
(Or a hoagie. Or a sub. Whatever you call it in your area.)
