3 Minutes To Midnight

"Peace through strength", said an oxymoron, in imitating old Agamemnon. "Let's make our country great again" - through hatred, fear and discord; By goading nuke-armed warlords; With disregard for the UN and blind eyes turned from Hebron. Celebrity trumps credibility. The death of democracy in the land of the free.

A union is losing unity. Thistle, rose and shamrock estranged by proxy. Once more within its cliffs and beaches, the nation gazes inward. Sclerotic; Progress hindered. Failed to practice what it preaches. A margin note in history. Xenophobes' and bigots' blurred agenda versus socialist pretender. These clouded hills know not surrender.

The gambler and fraud, the money-lender, in splendour, gorging on exploited tender. The weak shall inherit only debt, whilst bubble-supping brigands pick the pockets of the sickened. Nucleating wealth in surfeit, unchecked, no reprehender. A broken system, inherently selfish. Value conjured from the Delphic, willed by false confidence and embellished.

A plastic pandemic of chips in fish. Our seas, once rich with life, now rubbish. Food-chain tainted by tiny beads of death. On Henderson, where no man treads, lost paradise as our waste spreads and litters its entire breadth. Increasingly acidic, perennial pestilence and toxic blight of coffee cups, can rings, detritus - slowly killing everything in sight.

Depleting layer of ozone yields to light. The icebergs melt in rising fahrenheit, swelling every ocean, charging storms. Tsunamis and tornados surge. Irradiated; at the verge of famine, as the climate warms. Three minutes to midnight. From Paris to Kyoto, carbon soars. A powerful addiction. No furore. Our apathetic planet runs on oil and ore.

Despite these global issues, we still war. Long forgotten what we're fighting for. Crusaders, Mujahidin permeate. Though we're all sons of Abraham, in oneness with the Great I Am, such fear and prejudice and hate persist, when wisdom should abhor selfishness – our greatest flaw. The age of Man, a waning blaze; unrealised, we meet our end of days.
