Inner city pain and suburban malaise; a political journey across four decades.

2018

Inner city pain, and suburban malaise. We’ve been aching now for about four decades,

Material things are not a fair trade,

For purpose, meaning and feeling made. Rather have low GDP with high community, there’s more to life than shit tons of money.

And I don’t blame Mrs May.

She’s an empty vessel, nothing new to say.

It’s been a long process to get to this day, let’s go back in time to Diana’s day.

1979

Yeah let’s talk about Mrs Thatcher, One cold blooded, lady spectacular.

It’s tempting to compare her to Dracula, her blind faith in markets led to disaster.

She definitely does have some kind of soul,

But it’s her legacy that fucked us all.

Yes, there is truth to the politcal point, We need to stay competive to be top of the joint.

But why race to the bottom and screw the poor?

I’d rather raise their standards; a nobler cause.

The retreat from equality wasn’t the worst,

It’s the blind faith in markets that embraced a curse.

We got so vulnerable to the big bubbles that burst,

With less state to fall back on, she pre-ordered the hearse.

1996

Moving forward to the time of Tony Blair, He did a fair amount to try and repair.

The inequality of Thatcherite society,

But why he drag us to the middle east?

Blair did a little socialist window dressing,

But the flaws in the system he wasn’t addressing.

He jumped ship and left us bailing,

He must have clocked we were about to start flailing.

He did good things, like minimum wage,

Built the best education of any age.

But a booming chimera he knew we were riding,

So he jumped ship and Brown took the hiding.

2008

2008 came and fucked us all,

but Brown was about to steady the fall.

The unthinkable happened, the market fell down,

And in the chaos neoliberals lost their crown.

Brown led the world to follow Mr Keynes,

He invested in the country, till it got off its knees.

He gets crap, but he deserves respect,

I think the western world owes him a debt.

And I tell you what, the stimuli worked,

By 2010 we had an upward lurch.

Of employment and GDP,

Had we found the solution, finally?

Brown saved the day, but lost the war of ideas.

Labour were weak at consoling the fears,

We had a growing nation, but a shit ton debt,

That it came from the banks, we conveniently forget.

Tories pinned the owing to Labour’s spending,

Ignoring the fact, the crash wasn’t their doing.

The free market had fucked every nation,

Britain like others lacked defensive regulation.

The funny thing is, the Blues wanted less,

Meaningful control over the market mess.

They were screaming and yelling: The economy must be free!

If they were driving, it’d be worse. Seriously.

Yes the Tories won the war of ideas,

They capitalised on ignorance and fears.

They pointed fingers, highlighted the debt.

With less than a whimper the narrative was set.

2010

So in came David and George,

They couldn’t wait to get their paws,

On the slowly recovering economy,

And fuck it all up with austerity.

They froze wages and cancelled projects,

All state workers got squeezed in the nets.

All to pay of the banker’s debts,

But were they punished? Off the hook they were let.

Don’t get me started on Ian Duncan Smith,

He hurt so many, his daggers did twist.

The disabled couldn’t get a single lift,

The job centre rewarded to give the poor short shrift.

Guess what happened. The economy stalled.

Brown’s growth suddenly falled.

GDP down by at least nought point two,

The two idiots had no clue what to do.

The slowed down the vicious cuts,

2013 we started to grow back up.

The sly tossers had the bloody cheek,

To claim it was austerity that made the small leaps.

We grew despite of austerity,

Not because of that flawed policy.

How much was lost in the cutting and pain?

Krugman say five percent, in a conservative claim.

2016

And all the crap caused by austerity,

Was pinned on Europe. What a stupid fallacy!

It’s resulted in Brexit , an epic tragedy,

Demagogues spread lies, and we took ‘em seriously.

Yep we voted to leave the EU,

An imperfect organisation, but it had done so much good!

Whatever happens, at least we can try

To make the best of the bed in which we must lie.

2015

But before that we had 2015.

Cameron against the Miliband machine.

But despite all the suffering Cameron caused,

He was elected in to do a lot more.

Cameron’s political wager, that went down the pan.

For such a reckless risk, I can’t forgive the man.

So he lost us Europe, then he resigned.

Didn’t have the courage to follow through his design.

2016

And nobody fucking wanted the job,

They all chickened out, we were left with knob.

A sour robot, with nothing to say.

Here we are, back to miss May!

2017

But she didn’t learn from David’s mistake,

Another reckless gamble she did make.

Strong and stable, the endless croak,

As 13 seats were chucked off the boat.

That thought literally makes me grin,

Not a single gain did her gamble win.

A coalition of chaos with Irish twats,

Nobody in Britain voted for that!

My vote was for the geezer Mr. JC,

And I don’t agree with all his policy.

But he had the courage yeah, to express himself,

All the fake politicians are bad for our health.

They get caught in career,

The media makes them fear.

too scared to speak their own mind,

So they pussy out with empty sound bites.

Jeremy however, he said: fuck that,

I am who I am, don’t like it, so what?

I respected his message of authenticity,

Repressed leaders damage society.

2018

So we have inner city pain, and suburban malaise. We’ve been aching now for forty decades,

Material things are not a fair trade,

For purpose, meaning and feeling made. I’d rather low GDP with community, there’s more to being happy than making money.

There it is, a brief nations history,

I say what I think, you may disagree.

Have a conflicting comment, post it feel free,

You do you, and I’ll do me.

I really enjoyed writing this. It's entertaining putting across academic ideas in a written prose. Please critique the poetry, or the politics :)
