You should be able to steal them from other civs like in real life. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleopatra's_Needle

I thought they were gifts? Egypt has a bit of a habit of doing that because they have soooo much ancient artefacts. I'm sure pretty much 99% of the cultural stuff from abroad in London is stolen, but as far as I'm aware Cleopatra's Needle is the exception

I would imagine that “gifts” from the pro-British colonial administration are probably not looked at in a positive way by the people though

cmn3y0•

no...Egypt was controlled by the British at the time. There was no government of Egypt there to give them away, some English guy just paid the locals to dig it up and then had it shipped to London.

Ok that'll be my mistake, for some reason I always think the scramble for Africa started and ended about 2 centuries before it actually did

Well to be fair, the ancient monuments were being defaced and broken down by locals for trival use. I imagine if many of the artefacts hadn't been stolen by the Brits, they wouldn't exist today.

JamesNinelivesAncient ruins are my favourite resource•

Perhaps, but there's a difference between taking something for conservation and then keeping it even after the country of origin has museums of their own lol.

A good counter-example might be Cambodia, where foreign nations have invested in preservation efforts supported by the local people.

I have no idea but I would certainly like to know more about the circumstances!

Not that it isn't quality content but whats going on with all these RL buildings on this sub? I thought civjerk was there for a reason!

HS_GGEZ•

Why exactly isnt that quality content? I enjoyed that post

> Not that it isn't quality content

He said he is not saying it is not quality.

This is basically why reddit is so frustrating.

I really wish mods would tighten the rules. No more "funny" religion names, no more "look I spawned in tundra/by a million resources/by a warmonger" posts, no more "porn"... The occasional historical post should be fine, tbh, provided it doesn't take up half the front page.

Im going to have to downvote you because those are the exact reason I'm on this sub

I’m one of those that post the real life sites and buildings. I checked but there’s no civjerk sub.
