Will getting good at another job hurt my ability to play my raid main?

[Question]

I'm currently a SAM main, and I'm happy with my performance. My static is on God Kefka now, and I have an alt I'd like to learn to play MCH on at a similar skill level to my SAM, but I'm worried it's going to hurt my ability to raid effectively on SAM.

Is this reasonable? Is there a chance it could make me better at DPS overall instead of worse? What's been your experience?

Playing other classes will only make you better at the game overall. Certainly, you may lose a slight edge if you ignore your main for an extended period of time, but it should come back right away.

This! This! This! ...so much THIS! ...you will have such a strong grasp of the cohesion of party members necessary to maybe join the 4% of players who actually complete end game prior to the content nerf.

However, knowing how several jobs support one another in a proper fashion will ultimately cause you to lose your mind.

...it will.

...but do it anyway.

that's entirely up to you. no one here will be able to tell you how your brain functions and whether or not it can retain information on one class while you learn another

I find that leveling other classes actually helps me understand what my party is doing. Especially a tank and healer. There’s so much going on with those two that DPS don’t see. That said, keep practicing on your main class or you’ll have to build up your muscle memory again. That said, I really don’t recommend having a full alt character for a second class. It’ll be a lot easier to level alt classes on your first character than to slog through ARR again.

I was kinda in the same situation when leveling my alt as well. Made her a healer but I wanted to go into raiding with her as well (my main is a NIN, not a healer), so I needed to level a DPS job on her too. I ended up leveling and learning SAM (because it starts at 50 where I had to level NIN from scratch if I wanted to play that), which I found out I enjoyed as much as NIN. Now I play both and haven't become worse than I was before on NIN, I just can play more stuff than before at a good level.

Nah. Just be sure to stay fresh on both. I prog and get weekly clears on sch (which I dislike, but no one else I know wants to play it) but join traps throughout the week on smn and blm. Once you understand what is required to play your main at a very optimized level, you may get rusty in terms of muscle memory but you will retain that core skill set for quite some time. Especially if you stay within the same role (you will likely have the same mechanics with few exceptions like forsaken 2 in o8s, ect...).

Lol. Ikr? I leveled all jobs because I wanted to play all jobs...or experience them I should say. But it does come in handy when no one wants to play "X Job," which in my 30 months of play is usually a DPS because they don't do enough damage comparatively, and more often a tank or healing job for no 'obvious' reason.
