Opinions - Maya 2018 Update 3

It’s been some time now since the release of U3 so I thought I’d pose the question. What do you all think of 2018.3? Is it stable, are you having issues that existed in previous versions, issues that are new, what-have-you. Just looking for general feedback of the community.

I’m currently running a project and we’re still on 2018.2 as it’s pretty stable for the most part. Looking to see if U3 would be worth the upgrade. It’s got a nice bug fix list and a couple of new features that would be nice to have.

Note: I’m talking purely about core Maya. Arnold is not to be included in the discussion, as it’s developed separately.

I had to upgrade as it fixes a simple bug. Grab a cube, scale it in one axis, rotate it, then translate it. The translation will be sluggish and in the incorrect direction. U3 fixes this. (as does using an older version of maya!)

It still doesn't fix the issue of messing up a mesh upon opening a previous save where the mesh didn't have its history deleted. A big example is mirroring a mesh and saving your file without deleting its history. When you open the file again, that mesh will be all over the place and there's literally no way to fix it.

It seems worth the update. I haven't had any major issues yet. I still have an issue sometimes with the manipulators, though.

I have been the guinea pig in our office for 2018 (most others are still on the latest 2017).

Been using 2018.3 since it updated, haven't noticed any alarming bugs yet, and as mentioned above, fixes some other weirdness that was in earlier 2018s. I'd say you're just as safe as 2018.2

Using viewport tessellation still crashes like 90% of the time. Don't know if you care about that at all, but I was hoping it would be fixed. Oh well.

Check you’re on the recommended drivers for your card. It’s usually not the latest driver version and recently this seems to have helped us avoid a bunch of stability issues related to the viewport. On mobile so can’t find a link, but Autodesk publish a list of approved drivers for each version of maya.

I'm afraid I've tried using the driver recommended to me by Autodesk on the forums and did not have any success either. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I wonder if this fixes a bug where if you import a mesh it triangulates / deletes certain parts.
